A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [CLOSE PROGRAM]

I have installed this twice, the control panel runs but Apache does not. I click on Apache start button and get the above message.
I have C++ runtime 2008 installed. I disabled User account control.

I've been at this for hours and hours. all I want to do is use joomla.

Does this help..means nothing to me.

Try running the control panel as Admin (right-click > run as Admin on the executable or right-click > properties > compatibility > check run as admin on the shortcut)

You can also grab the latest control panel from the link in my signature which should stop the control panel from crashing.

I have ticked the run as admin box. Now the control panel loads with this.

08:46:43 [main] Control Panel Ready

I can now tick the the apache service box.
When the start button is clicked the control panel adds
[Apache] Attempting to start Apache service....

The control panel then just hangs. When I close the window I get a similar message and one saying windows will try to find a solution, which it doesn't.

That typically means a Windows Service is using port 80. This could be a component of IIS (sometimes it is World Wide Publishing Service). You could either find the existing service and stop it/reconfigure it or reconfigure Apache to listen on a different port. Apache will not start until this conflict is resolved.

This means you have another MySQL installed and running that is conflicting with XAMPP. You will need to stop/reconfigure/uninstall this other MySQL instance or reconfigure the XAMPP MySQL to listen on a different port and use a different service name.
