Which port to change to?

Postby lungov » 26. December 2012 20:38

Hi,

I just extracted all the files and started the control panel, but ports 80 and 443 are already being used by "c:\windows\system32\wwahost.exe" which I later found out to be the Windows Store. It makes sense, because I don't remember having this issue on Windows 7, but anyways... The message I received in the control panel is the same as in many other topics, but I kept it below as other users might find this one first.

My question is what ports should I change Apache to. I don't want to just start guessing numbers as I know close to nothing about what I'm doing or what that causes in my computer.

I saw a reply to another topic where it says that, for SSL (port 443) at least, it is not just changing the port number in the control panel but I would also need to change it in the httpd-ssl.config file. If that is also needed for port 80, please advise.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hello,

You need to make the changes in both places.

For the HTTP port > /xampp/apache/config/httpd.conf and reconfigure the control panel port
For the HTTPS port > /xampp/apache/config/extra/httpd-ssl.conf and reconfigure the control panel port

If you change a port from a default port, you need to specify it when you go to a URL. If you change port 80 to 81 for example, you would need to go to http://localhost:81 to get to it

Typically, which port you choose is not a huge deal as long as it is a free port http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_%28co ... working%29

Thank you, hackattack. It turned out I just logged off Windows Market and restarted Apache. I'll try to understand better what ports are and how to work with them.
