Can't establish connection with Localhost

Postby markiecarter » 22. October 2012 14:01

Hi All - I am new to XXAMP.

I have installed XXAMP Version 1.8.1 for Windows.
I am using XXAMP Control Panel 3.1.0.3.1.0

When I type in address:
http://localhost/
in Firefox 10.0.2

I get the following error message:

“Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.”

Other details:
Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2012
Service Pack 3

I’ve turned off the Firewall using command Firewall.cpl and selecting OFF under General settings.

When I Ping localhost, I get:

“Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, lost = 0, (0% loss),
Approx round trip timesin milli-seconds:
Min = 0ms, Max = 0ms, Avg = 0ms”

I’ve installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2008

I have Avira anti-virus software running, but have disabled this.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

I am still trying to work this one out...

I have been on the internet looking for answers. Here is what I have tried so far:

- Using IE instead of Firefox (no difference)
- Using 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost (no difference)
- Using cmd>netstat - o to see which ports are being used. The only ones are 1062 and 1063 used by firefox.exe
- Disabling IIS in Add/Remove Windows Components. Actually I couldn't find IIS in the list, but I disabled everything non-essential anyway (no difference)

Please - anyone got any bright ideas?

There is no process started listening on port 80.
What happens if you click on the Apache Start Button in the XAMPP control panel?
What is the output in the XAMPP control panel status bar?
What is the content of the \xampp\apache\logs\error.log?

Ok - I now have localhost working, and I get the XXAMP for Windows start screen.

But now when I click on phpMyAdmin in the Tools menu in the left-hand side I get an error screen, which says:

"
My SQL said
#2002 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
The server is not responding (or the local server's socket is not correctly configured).
"

In answer to your previous question, this is what is in the error.log:
"

Your help as always is much appreciated. Mark
