I may try over-installing 1.8.1 over 1.8.0. My 1.8.0 was built fresh.
Anyone have any success?
Thanks in advance.

I did it the 'long' way as per sticky and all is okay.
Thank you.

oy that's gonna be a pain, is how I usually do it but was hoping for a faster update since its only a x.x.1 release
does this mean there will not be an upgrade package to simplify the process in the future?

I did attempt an over-install and PHPMyAdmin could not connect to mysql. I then decided that it was worth investigating. I uninstalled, installed 1.8.1, etc including rebuilding the databases and have moved forward.

yup more or less I did the same but I am horrible at upgrading I always mess up and spend a couple hours trying to fix the things I mess up even with detailed instructions like that
Got through it but feel like its really hogging resources compared to older versions ... o.O ... though it is faster loading sites, other resource hungry programs I have running will lock from time to time now might be unrelated to XAMPP though this system is aging lol

I did 8 databases in < 1 hour total.
