Unable to start Apache server on windows xp

Using a Win XP (SP2) OS computer, downloaded Xampp 1.8, using the .zip. Extracted the files to the root of a second hard drive on the machine, started the xampp console. MySQL starts is assigned a PID and PORT number. Apache does not start, the console status says "Starting Apache...", nothing happens.

Please let me know what to try next.

Desperately seeking Apache service :?

Use the netstat button to see if ports 80 and 443 are in use or open.

Hello,
Thank you for the reply.

Ran netstat, ports 80 and 443 are not in use. Other suggestions? To add, I'm not sure of the installation. I used the .zip file, extracted the files but was at a loss for what to do next. Started the xampp control panel. MySql starts, still no Apache service.

Hey JJ_Tagy, found a fix.
Reinstalled Xampp using the installer .exe method.
Use the comment made my Rankxerox1984, from another thread under the same subject and it worked. Apache service is running. Now working on MySQL service to start. Oh well...
