Unable to login to phpMyAdmin with new user

Postby LKClark » 18. July 2012 18:11

Hello, all. I am a new XAMPP user and a noob in the world of building web servers, and I could use some help.

My stats:
XAMPP Version 1.8.0 (c:\xampp)
Control Panel Version 3.0.12
Server - Windows 2008r2

I have everything up and running, and I am working on installing phpBB for one of my websites. However, I am unable to create a new user in phpMyAdmin and be able to log in using that new user. Every time I try to log in I get "Cannot log in to the MySQL server." I am positive that the username and password are correct (board, 1). Also, the password for "root" is currently blank. I have tried my scenario both with a password for root and without. It doesn't seem to affect the situation.

I have been through the forums and these are the steps I have currently taken:

  1. Edited c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts - 127.0.0.1 localhost is enabled, :: localhost is commented out
  2. Checked config.ini.php. Line $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'cookie'; has 'cookie' in it.
  3. Root password is currently blank.
  4. \xampp\mysql\bin\my.ini file - bind-address is set to "127.0.0.1"

According to my MySQL error log, I am getting no errors:

Code: Select all
120718 11:55:05 [Note] Plugin 'FEDERATED' is disabled.
120718 11:55:05 InnoDB: The InnoDB memory heap is disabled

Version: '5.5.25a'  socket: ''  port: 3306  MySQL Community Server (GPL)

However, in phpMyAdmin, I do show, at last count, 5 failed attempts for today. If you want to see my config.ini.php and my.ini files, I will happily post those, too.

Any assistance available will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi LKClark,

LKClark wrote:Every time I try to log in I get "Cannot log in to the MySQL server."

We need the full error message (including the error code) so that we can maybe find something with the help of a search engine.
Informations about the current priviledge and setting (for which host the user is created for example) are needed too.
Have you try to restart MySQL? Sometimes a flush priviledges is needed that changes to the users are taking effect.

best wishes,
Altrea

Altrea,

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, the sucker doesn't give me an error code. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when it gives me the error. If there is someplace else where I can look to garner the code, I will gladly look to find it.

As for the permissions for my user they are:

SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, DROP, FILE, INDEX, ALTER, CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES, CREATE VIEW, EVENT, TRIGGER, SHOW VIEW, CREATE ROUTINE, ALTER ROUTINE, EXECUTE

and are pertinent to the database of the same name as the user. Incidentally, I have also tried to create another "superuser." That did not work either. I'm trying, ironically enough, to install phpbb. lol It would be nice if I could avoid installing it under the "root" username.

Also, I have restarted MySQL and Apache AND rebooted my server, both to no avail.

Again, thanks for your help. Whatever other information you need, I'll provide.

If your users are created for all hosts (%) this behavior would make sense.

There is a user any@localhost respectively %@localhost which has a higher priority on logins then board@% respectively board@any.
Please check if your users are created for the localhost host and not for %

Althea,

That did it! I set the new user to username@localhost and voila, I can log in with that user now. It worked perfectly.

Thank you so very much!
