[Solved]Error OS 11001 no such host is know. : could not r

Postby yost87 » 21. April 2012 20:42

I cannot even get into the control panel. I was able to at on moment, made some changes to the hosts files and now I cannot.

I am using win7 installed XAMP on b: drive.

When I dounle click the desktop icon to start XAMP I get the small black window and in the white text is says:
Solved: Error OS 11001 no such host is know. : could not resolve host name xxx.local -- ignoring!

then the program hangs there until i close it.

Any help would be great

Hi yost87,

First rule: If you want to get help from volunteers, you have to be polite. Some sort of greeting and complimentary close don't cost much time. Some sort of request with Please and a question mark would be polite too.

yost87 wrote:I cannot even get into the control panel. I was able to at on moment, made some changes to the hosts files and now I cannot.

Second Rule: If you made changes to your configuration files, how should we know what you have changed without writing it here at this thread?
Should we guess or ask our crystal ball? You are expecting remote help from us, that is quite difficult without any hints.

yost87 wrote:When I dounle click the desktop icon to start XAMP I get the small black window and in the white text is says:
OS 11001 no such host is know. : could not resolve host name xxx.local -- ignoring!

Third Rule: If you post error messages, post them complete and precise. The best would be to copy and paste them.
Why this is needed: Not every willing volunteer here knows all possible error messages personally, but error messages can be requested at google if they are precise.

Relating to your issue: You have an error in your configuration. I guess it is in your VHost definitions.
But without knowing that configuration, you are the only person who can solve this.

best wishes,
Altrea

Altrea, Greetings! Thanks for the reply, but my intention was to thank any contributors for replies upon reading them. I apologise if I didn't follow your request.

Secondly, Thanks for the reply, and thanks in advance for the next reply. I was very frustrated and in a hurry when I sent the message, so I'm sure i mispelled some things and didn't "hit the nail on the head" with my description of what my issues are re: XAMP, mainly because I was hoping that I was missing something very simple and would receive a retort in a matter for hours, where which I would then thank the contributor. Seeing that the above did not happen as I hoped, I will include a precise description of my error and issues, in hopes of a retort proceeding.

If there are any recommendations to fix the error I am getting when starting B:\xampp\xampp_start.exe:

[<OS 11001>No suchhost is known. : Could not resolve host name xxx.local -- ignoring!]

I posted earlier as I was leaving my machine for several hours, and I have to apologize for the message I sent in haste and frustration, as I am being held up class project I would like to do well on, and only have a limited time. Again I apologize for the "chicken scratch" I left earlier.

I am using windows 7 Home edition on a practically new install with programs I am installing on a separate partition (dedicated to my installs and edited and downloaded files.
I followed this tutorial as my second install attempt, in hopes of being able to Set up a Windows test server using XAMPP.

I made the changes suggested in the tutorial and now i cannot get the blasted thing running. My machine hangs at that error and I have to use "xampp_stop - Shortcut" to terminate.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi yost87,

yost87 wrote:If there are any recommendations to fix the error I am getting when starting B:\xampp\xampp_start.exe:

[<OS 11001>No suchhost is known. : Could not resolve host name xxx.local -- ignoring!]

What i need to narrow down the issue is the text of these two files:
  • B:\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf
  • B:\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-vhosts.conf

yost87 wrote:I followed this tutorial as my second install attempt

Which toturial?

yost87 wrote:Hmmm... I am now wondering if I need to install server server software on my machine?

Which server software? Generally speaking: To get XAMPP running you just need free ports and (for the current version) the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

best wishes,
Altrea

Altrea, Thanks for the response!

I didn't attache this link ( http://drupal.org/node/161975 ) as I intended in my previous message to show the tutorial i was following.

I do not have MS c++ installed. Will Visual Studio 2010 Professional (x86) suffice for that C++package or do i need it also? I will download now anyhowz.

I have pasted requested files content:
Truly, thanks for taking the time to look into this. ;)

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "B:/xampp/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "B:/xampp/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "B:/xampp/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 0.0.0.0:80
#Listen [::]:80

Hi yost87,

i will make it short. All is related to your httpd-vhosts.conf file.

yost87 wrote:NameVirtualHost *:80

With this line you configure Apache to use namebased VirtualHosts. Requests on port 80 can be separated by their DomainNames. Thats okay.

yost87 wrote:<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName localhost
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:80>
DocumentRoot b:/xampp/htdocs/
ServerName localhost
</VirtualHost>

These two VHosts can't exist at the same time. A ServerName have to be unique if you use namebased VirtualHosts. I would remove the first one.

yost87 wrote:<VirtualHost pamperedspirit.localhost>

This line produces your error. It is not allowed to define a DomainName as parameter after <VirtualHost. The ServerName inside that <VirtualHost> Block is the correct place. If you want to define more than one DomainName for that VirtualHost, you can use the ServerAlias directive.

best wishes,
Altrea

again, many thanks!

-but, ;) could/would you give me some instructions as to what I should do? I am not looking for a free ride, I want to learn this stuff ( have taken C++, JAVA, and VB course at college level) but currently I am trying to finish a website and am wanting to stop having to upload to a remote webspace continually in order to see the changes I make to a CSS file (which I am yet to see take effect).

Thanks again, I am reading up on the links you included. Is that language PHP?

Best Regards

That's why i tried to explain it and gave you the URLs to the manuals. The manual does have really good examples.
But okay, because it is quite a small thing:

How your VHost Entry looks now
<VirtualHost pamperedspirit.localhost>
DocumentRoot "b:\websites\pamperedspirit"
ServerName pamperedspirit.local

CustomLog "b:\websites\pamperedspirit\logs\example.local.access.log" combined
ErrorLog "b:\websites\pamperedspirit\logs\example.local.error.log"

<Directory "b:\websites\pamperedspirit">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Assuming you just want to use one DomainName (pamperedspirit.local) for that Vhost, you simply need to change it to this:
<VirtualHost *:80>
DocumentRoot "b:\websites\pamperedspirit"
ServerName pamperedspirit.local

CustomLog "b:\websites\pamperedspirit\logs\example.local.access.log" combined
ErrorLog "b:\websites\pamperedspirit\logs\example.local.error.log"

<Directory "b:\websites\pamperedspirit">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

If you want to use pamperedspirit.localhost too (remember that each DomainName has to be added to your Windows HOSTS file too), it would look like this:
<VirtualHost *:80>
DocumentRoot "b:\websites\pamperedspirit"
ServerName pamperedspirit.local
ServerAlias pamperedspirit.localhost

CustomLog "b:\websites\pamperedspirit\logs\example.local.access.log" combined
ErrorLog "b:\websites\pamperedspirit\logs\example.local.error.log"

<Directory "b:\websites\pamperedspirit">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

No, thats just a type of configuration language. I don't know if this "language" does have a defined name.

Altrea, thanks a million. After I finish watching the movie/docudrama Enron, I will make the changes. I appreciate ou saving me the time to debug, now I can spend it doing what I downloaded XAMP for.

I realize that you included those links for me to gain some skills, but I just don't seem to have the time just now. I'm sure I will mess the config up and will be scouring these pages for answers rather than posting so quickly. I wanted to get more familiar with the servers and php prior to reaching this stage of the project, but I started a trial of Adobe CS5 and was trying to get the most use out of it before time ran out, so I fell behind in the project.

I am planning to install server software on my system, or on an old machine I may be able to rig up as a dedicated server for my stuff, what do you feel is a good server system, development environment, and design suite? I am very unfamiliar but have access to most Microsoft software for development, deployment, and design. I plan to tweak some site templates such as Delphic and PHPBB.

I hope your weekend is going great, because you just brightened mine (even though it was 87'F out today...).
It was so hot I saw a lizard drinking lemonade...

;)
