self-signed cert for un-named domain

I'm looking to set up ssl on a server on the local network. It doesn't have a domain name. All the instructions say to put in the correct domain name for the "common name" field. If I don't have one do I use the IP address? If so, internal or external IP address?

Thanks.

I found the full machine name and used that. Now apache won't restart and isn't giving any error in the log file.

cert is spelled crt on windows. Problem solved.
