Tomcat service not running after installing XAMPP [SOLVED]

Postby asadfx » 07. March 2012 00:36

I have followed the following steps to install XAMPP 1.7.7 in Windows 7 Home(64-bit)

    1. I downloaded the ZIP file instead of the the EXE file, and saved it to the "Downloads" folder.

    2. Using WinRAR I extracted all contents within it.

    3. After extracting the ZIP file, I moved the newly created "xampp" folder from "Downloads" to "C:\"

    4. Next, I turned off the User Account Control (UAC).

    5. Then, navigated to "C:\xampp" and created a shortcut to the Desktop.

    6. Ran the new XAMPP Control Desktop shortcut and "Start"ed the ones for MySQL, Apache and Tomcat. For, MySQL, Apache I see a green "Running" indicator. However, for Tomcat NOTHING. The log shows that Tomcat has started on port 8080, but in reality it is not and I am not seeing green "Running" indicator.

The following screen shot shows this:

When I open up Web Browser, and type in http://localhost I see the XAMPP splash screen. But, if I try with http://localhost:8080, it shows "unable to connect". If I go to Tomcat Status I see:

Why is Tomcat DEACTIVATED? I have tried to install XAMPP 1.7.7 with .EXE file and the same thing happens. How can I fix this?

P.S. this might be a stupid question...... but here goes. What is the difference between an Apache service and a Tomcat service (see the first image)?

You could use the version 3 control panel found in the xampp installation folder:
xampp-control-3-beta.exe
Right click on it to select to run as an admin for best results.
Stop all XAMPP components and remove the ticks in the Svc check boxes then click on Exit in the older 2.5 version before starting this version 3 control panel.

Better still, use the latest and greatest Control Panel Version 3, the download post is linked below my signature.
Simply extract all the files from the CPv3 folder in to the xampp installation folder and overwrite when asked - do not extract the CPv3 folder complete, only extract it's content.
Then right click the exe file to run as administrator and to create a shortcut to the desktop for example, for easier access.

Make sure that you have exited all other control panel versions before starting this latest version.

This version 3 (XCPv3) control panel has many new features including a much more detailed log window and a button to easily access the log files to help with troubleshooting start and running issues.

A service, referred to in XAMPP, is a Windows service ie. it will start a component when you boot your PC and a Windows service is not required to run XAMPP in it's intended development environment.

After installing the latest V3 Control Panel simply start the components you wish to use by manually selecting the Start button.
