Error in Xampp - help me

hi guys, i've installed Xampp 1.7.7 and joomla 2.5, but i have two problems,
1. when i try to STOP mysql from the botton in the XAMPP Control Panel Applicaton, it not stop the service and it remains in "Running" mode. How can i do Start/Stop of mysql?
2. I've copied a second decompressed folder of Joomla in Xampp\htdocs, but when i do the procedure for initialize the new joomla installation, at the step of Database configuration, the wizard said that "can not connect to the Database: connection Error:2".

Well, you could get a better answer (which I suspect I know) if we knew WHAT version of "WIN" you were actually on. Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 7 64 bit, Windows Server 2008 etc....
