Can't find any info on installingthe new version over an old one. Do you have to unuinstall the existing version first, or will it install by itself?

You will need to uninstall the older version before installing the latest version.

These instructions may help:

Is there anyway to upgrade the version without deleting everything? coz in that case we need to backup all those files in htdocs plus the sql files right?

Backup the htdocs and mysql data files, uninstall the old and install the new version, then copy back the htdocs and mysql data files. But is there anyway not to uninstall the whole xampp coz what if I have so many files already?

Do everything up to the point where you are ready to delete the XAMPP folder.

Then either:

A. simply rename the folder - maybe xampp-177 (that is what I do)
or:
B. if you have more than one drive partition, move it to the root of another drive.

Just realize you will not easily be able to make both work at the same time...

Good Luck

Hi,

I found myself needing to update XAMPP as well, and decided to do a fresh install (in a new folder) and leave the old one "as-is".

Works perfectly, just make remember that you can only run one of them, not both at the same time.
