Tomcat is not started on port 8080 (XP SP3) 1.7.7 [SOLVED]

Postby WolfShade » 06. December 2011 01:36

Hello, everyone.

I'm trying to get Tomcat started as a service on my WinXP/SP3 system. Apache is starting just fine, and I can't wait to get the CPv3.0.10. But Tomcat is not starting. At all.

I've used the NetStat tool, and there is NOTHING using ports 8005, 8009, or 8080. When I click the button to start Tomcat, I get the message that Tomcat is starting, but then nothing. Also, the checkbox for starting it as a service is greyed out, unclickable. I've tried the .bat files for installing and starting, and they just error out.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

^_^

I believe XCPv3.0.10 is available from the alternate download site from this topic:

Thanks. I couldn't get it, earlier, because I forgot to disable NoScripts. Heh..

Anyhoo.. I just checked the logs for Apache, and noticed the following:
(OS 10061) No connection would be made because the target machine actively refused it. : proxy: AJP: attempt to connect to 127.0.0.1:8009 failed.

Trying to think of what on my machine could refuse the connection, and I'm drawing a blank. The only thing I can think of is ZoneAlarm, and I cannot seem to add tomcat7.exe or tomcat7w.exe to the list of allowed programs.

Ideas?

Thanks,

^_^

To test if it is indeed ZoneAlarm, temporarily disable it then try Tomcat again.

Enable ZoneAlarm again after the test.

These Google search results may hold a solution if ZoneAlarm is the culprit.

Good luck. :)

This is getting weird. As of right now, Tomcat will not automatically start, but if I open the CPv3.0.10 (I was able to use the CONFIG to check the box to start Tomcat automatically) then it will run the command to start Tomcat. But it opens a cmd window (minimized), shows a lot of text, the last line of which is "INFO: Server startup in 1662 ms", and then just sits there. According to CPv3, Tomcat is running; but if I close the cmd window, it stops, and the cmd window never really finishes. It just hangs there. All this without disabling ZoneAlarm (I'm thinking of switching to Comodo.)

I get the feeling that it is running, but not correctly. Thoughts?

Thanks,

^_^

To answer your original question, the control panel does not support running tomcat as a windows service at this time. The default run mode for tomcat on windows is via the console. If you leave it as is, it will open a console window with all the tomcat initialization stuff (if you close it, tomcat will stop running). You can make the console not appear by going to the Config button in the upper right and unchecking the "tomcat output window visible'" checkbox. Tomcat requires Java to run and it will show up as a java process in your processes list. If you are getting any errors/java exceptions in that console window I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks, hackattack142. I did make the change so that the window does not appear when I start Tomcat. It works. Are there any future plans to support starting Tomcat as a service, when XAMPP starts?

I am investigating how easy it is to do in a portable fashion (no environment variables or custom registry entries which the current tomcat service scripts need). I do not use tomcat and no one has ever requested a service so I have never looked into it before now. If i can get a fairly reliable installation/removal script made, i will try to get it into the next control panel release.

Edit: please try version 3.0.11

Awesome. In the meantime, if you open Services after XAMPP is installed, I did notice (after running the Tomcat install service) that Tomcat is listed and (at least in WinXP) can be set for automatic. I have _not_ tested it without logging in; however, I have the CPv3 in my StartUp folder, and when I log in to my computer, Tomcat is eventually changed to "running" on ports 8005, 8009, and 8080.

So far, I am enjoying learning PHP, look forward to learning Java, and plan to set this environment so that ASP 3.0, ASP.Net, and (eventually) ColdFusion will all work together.

Thank you for your wisdom.

^_^

PS. I'll try CPv3.0.11 at a later date. I'm kinda stoked about getting some CODING done. :)
