htdocs as library

I'm using Win 7 as a development platform...

I'm looking at ways to organize my site development. I find it convenient to put web sites in directories other than ../htdocs. I'm wondering if I can use an alias for a web site in htdocs or if htdocs could be a library?

create a subdirectory in htdocs and place a vhost on it.
