[solved]Problem with XAMPP when MySQL is already installed

Postby trist » 08. November 2011 17:51

So.. this is probably stupid question. But I downloaded earlier MySQL workbench for planning my database and installed MySQL with it. Now I wanted to try out using php scripts for queries and downloaded XAMPP and installed it. During installation I got error message "port 3306 already in use". Took me a while to realize it was because of that earlier MySQL installation.. at least most likely :P

Anyway, now that I open XAMPP Control Panel I see that MySQL is not running and if I check status it has this line "mysql State 0 Service 1 ... Port 3306) and when trying to open phpMyAdmin it fails. Earlier installation was made into folder C:\Program files (x86) and this one into folder C:\XAMPP. My OS is 64bit Windows 7 and read somewhere I shouldn't try installing XAMPP in Program files (x86).

Is there some simple solution for this problem? Except uninstalling MySQL workbench?

Hi trist,

MySQL Workbench is just an administrative tool for MySQL and don't block port 3306. So the problem must be another program.
Have you installed another MySQL Database additional to MySQL Workbench?

Please download and extract the new XAMPP control panel v3 to your xampp directory and use this instead the default control panel. It gives you much more information about problems like used ports and has some really helpful functions.

That will help us to solve your problem more quickly.

best wishes,

Okay, thanks for reply at first. I just supposed it might have been that problem but I guess the reason is elsewhere then :)

With that control panel v3 I don't see anything wrong with ports (Although during installation it did mention that).

Thus I ignored the error message I get when trying to open phpMyAdmin is like this: "PhpMyAdmin tried to connect MySQL server but server denied connection. Check the server name, username and password from config.inc.php and check they match with data given by MySQL-server administrator." (translated it so might include errors).

Didn't find that config.inc.php anyway...

Okay, two things:
- You should place the new control panel v3 directly in your c:\xampp\ folder, not in c:\xampp\cpv3\cpv3\
- You run Apache and MySQL as service. Please try to unregister these services and stop these components. Later if all is running well you can register them as service again.

if these two changes are done, please try to start apache and mysql with the start buttons.
Then we need the full status messages the new control panel gives to you.

Alright, did first thing, a logical change now that I think about it, just extracted it quickly like that at first..

And for the second thing, I stopped those services. Although had to stop MySQL through Win-Services (somehow found it there). I had no idea about how to unregister those so i just decided to start them again and surprise: Everything works fine now! :)

Well, the easiest way is to just untick the green checkfields in the control panel v3 to unregister the service :D

I'm glad it works now for you.
So i can close this topic?
