Apache Can't start (Win7 64) 1.7.7 [SOLVED]

Sharley wrote:How exactly did you uninstall XAMPP as it would seem that perhaps the Apache Windows service may not have been uninstalled first.

It would be advisable to uninstall correctly and do a fresh install by following this procedure.

Start the XAMPP Control Panel.
Make sure there are no ticks in any of the Svc check boxes.
Stop all XAMPP components.
Press 'Exit' in the XAMPP Control Panel.
Delete the xampp folder completely after backing up your own files.
Reboot as it often helps clean things up.

Try and install again using your preferred method but if you want to also change the installer method then follow my preferred method instructions below for the ZIP or 7zip version.

Download the ZIP or 7zip version of XAMPP.
Extract (drag) the xampp folder to the C:\ drive or the root of any drive or partition like D:\, E:\, etc.
Run the C:\xampp\setup_xampp.bat file (this sets the correct paths for you).
Open the XAMPP Control Panel version 3 (xampp-control-3-bets.exe) found in the xampp folder and start Apache and MySQL (do not tick any service module boxes)
When both Apache and MySQL are running type http://localhost/ select your language and exercise all the demos in the left menu frame.

You should now be able to proceed and enjoy XAMPP. :)

Hi, I am not sure if I am posting in the right place, but I was able to get xampp 1.7.7 with xampp controller 3 on Win 7 x64 working... I decided to delete the folder and reinstall it... now apache will not start and there are not conflicts with the ports. I did notice that it is not creating an error.log file for apache.... not sure if it's permissions, but i gave full control on permissions.

Any ideas?

I originally installed it under d:/xampp and it was working fine for a few hours.... I even SVN'ed the xampp so i can keep my changes when i go to another computer. and I brought it back and it worked...
THEN I decided to delete the entire xampp folder and do a fresh install... and now it will not start apache.

By the way, I've been reading through these forums for 3.5 hours now. The only thing I haven't figured out is why it doesn't create an access.log or error.log.. although it did before..

also
When I look in the windows event viewr I get this:
The Apache service named reported the following error:
>>> httpd.exe: Syntax error on line 61 of D:/xampp/apache/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load D:/xampp/apache/modules/mod_actions.so into server: The specified module could not be found. .

Doesn't make sense, since it is there.. :S

Did you uninstall exactly as per those instructions you quoted me above?

Or did you just delete the xampp folder?

Did you download and install the runtime file just to be sure it is not that:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/de ... px?id=5582

Are you using the version 3 control panel, if so then you have an xampp-control-3-beta.log file in the xampp folder that you can read and then paste here any lines that you find that you don't understand or that might help me troubleshoot why Apache is not starting and has never started in this current install.

As this is not related to this topic I will move it to it's own topic.

I did exactly as you said above with the exception of the download and install runtime. The only reason, I didn't download the runtime, was because it was working, so I assumed I have the runtimes.

I even moved the xampp folder to another directory d:/myserver/xampp (which worked at one point).. This is what I have in my xampp_control3.log (it's not the beta)

Code: Select all

11:56:35 PM  [main]    Windows version: 5.1 (build 2600) - Service Pack 3

Are there any green ticks in the service module column in CP3?

No green ticks. I don't like installing services.

Yes move the xampp folder to either root of the C: or the D: drive again then run the setup bat file and then try and start Apache and mysql.

If they don't start then download the runtime file and try again.

If that fails to allow both to start then download a fresh zip or 7zip file and delete the xampp folder then extract the new download xampp folder to either C: or D: and run the setup bat file and then try and start Apache and MySQL again.

I installed the runtimes and it showed that I already had them, so I did a repair and I am rebooting now.. Thanks for staying with me.. I would really like this to work.

So would I. :)

We will have it working if we can find what is causing this no start issue with Apache - MySQL we will sort out after so stick to just trying to start Apache first.

Ok, this is weird...
I downloaded a fresh copy of xampp to c:/xampp
I ran it.. it worked.

Now i must move it to d://myserver/xampp.
Let's see if it works, be right back.
