Apache will not start [SOLVED]

Postby vthomeschoolmom » 31. October 2011 19:18

My sister has asked me to help her with some web work. I am an ASP.NET developer. Always wanted to learn PHP and whatnot, so here we go. Please bear with my rank newbie-ness. I downloaded and installed XAMPP. During the install process, I observed what might have been an error flash by on the screen. But it was too fast to know for sure what it said.

I am looking at my control panel. Apache is not started. I have selected Svc checkbox. I look in the windows services. I see mysql is started. I see FileZilla is started. Apache is not listed.

I poked about. I see that there is an apache_start.bat. I looked at it. It runs apache\bin\httpd.exe. Ok I tried to run that from a command prompt. I receive the message "The system cannot execute the specified program."

I found the readme. There are bats in the apache directory for apache_installservice etc. I tried that. Same result.

Can anyone point me to troubleshooting information that would help me figure out why apache won't start?

Thanks!

S

PS. I read the FAQ. My Win XP firewall is currently OFF as per the FAQ. (I will fix it properly as per the FAQ later.)

hello
maybe port 80 is blocked by another program like skype..
In xampp177 there is another control panel included (c:\xampp\xampp-control-3-beta.exe)

uncheck svc an start xampp-control-3-beta.
If the guess is right you'll get an errormessage like this:
21:29:19 [apache] Possible problem detected!
21:29:19 [apache] Port 80 in use by "another_program.exe"!

Stop "another_program.exe" and have another try

Hi vthomeschoolmom,

Sound like you haven't installed the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package.

Thats a requirement for XAMPP 1.7.7. Please check if you have installed that runtime on your system.

best wishes,
Altrea

Definately the answere was installing the Visual C++ Redistributable update form me! :D
I'm installing XAMPP 1.7.7 on a W2k virtual machine, and APache just would NOT start, and none of the batch files would get it going.

This advice offered by the Altrea cured me of my headache!
There are many posts that describe the same symptoms in which the same stock answere re Skype is given.
I should go back and add Altrea's response to those. I'll start with this one!

Thanks!!

No need to do that as it is now well covered and only applies to the newer XAMPP versions that were compiled with VC9 that is 1.7.5> so this fix may not do it for every instance that Apache can't start - Skype and IIS are still valid reasons that Apache can't start as they both use the ports that Apache requires exclusively.

I will close this now as it may start to fill up with more of the same.
