Mysql_start.bat and Xampp

I have a query regarding mysql. My installation seems to work fine but for one curious hiccup.
When I use the PHPmysqladmin option on the XAMPP GUI I can log in and see my databases fine after I use the mysql_start.bat. But when I try to test the Mysql installation, it reports that it doesn't work. Who is right? Why?
Also, the mysql_stop.bat doesn't seem to stop mysql.
Any advice?
