Xampp Keeps Loading on windows 7 64-bit

I just installed the new version of xampp on my computer which runs on windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. During the installation, it gave me a message "sql could not start"port 3360 is being used.

I continued anyway and manually started the service from the control panel. It showed "running" just like the other services apache &filezilla (both are running). When I try to use firefox to load localhost/xampp it just keeps loading infinitely.

Left it for close to 30mins, but it doesnt load or show any page just a white screen, even tried localhost/phpmyadmin. Same thing, is there something I can do because Im really thinking of reverting to windows xp or vista if this cannot be resolved. Please anybody solve this for me.
PS. I've also tried wamp, it installs perfectly without errors, but still does not load. Any suggestions??

First of all check out who is using your port 3360 possibly with a portchecker.
After that try to stop that service and prevent it from running at startup.
Reboot.
Reinstall XAMPP in the same folder as the first time(just overwrite it).
If the error occurs again check if the service you just stopped ist running again and stop it if so.
Then go back to the installation and click on back just to get to the last step and reclick on continue to retry the start of mySQL.
This could solve your problem, if so or if not please tell us :)

Try using the new version 3 Control Panel which gives a better idea of what is going on and has many more control features:
\xampp\xampp-control-3-beta.exe

Click on the Netstat button to see what is using the ports that XAMPP requires exclusively like 3306, 80 and 443.

Although it is named as a beta version it is actually well tested and just about all known bugs have been addressed by the author Stephen:

You can paste in forum code tags the log file window with the details if you can't understand them.Did you uninstall WAMPP completely before installing XAMPP?

Your issue sounds similar to this posts where the MySQL service of WAMPP is still installed and needs to be removed from the registry as it is hogging port 3306.

How to open a command prompt in Win7 as Administrator:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/47 ... rator.html

The command to use to get rid of the WAMPP instance of MySQL is:
sc delete "mysql"

This procedure is safe and has been used on these forums for years to remove sticky services for Apache. MySQL and Filezilla all with great success.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for your very helpful reply. I have successfully removed wamp and now xampp (v 1.7.7) installs without any errors. But the problem still persists.. Firefox, explorer even opera keeps loading when I enter http://localhost . Checked netstat and the port 3306 is now being used by xampp and is listening. Im thinking if I re-install windows 7 to a fresh copy and just install xampp before I install any other programs maybe it'll work. I have programs like yahoo msg, norton internet security, dap (when I installed this, was prompted to install plugins for firefox&explorer which I did) etc. Maybe taking it back to factory state might reset the system. Well, thats just my novice view.. Do you think theres something blocking my browsers from accessing my localhost? :(

Thanks Sharley, followed your queue and still saw wamp in my c://wamp .Executed the code, and now wamp is deleted. Xampp installs perfectly now as I have said above but it does not load all the same. Its the same infinite loading. Checked the links, still yet to get a real solution. :?:

Don't clean your disc just for one program to get running.
Normally messengerclients like Yahoo or msn did not effect your possibility to call localhost. But I can see another programm that is abler to do this. It is your Norton. Try deactivating Norton and see what happens if you call localhost. If this is a success then you have to configure your Norton to let you call localhost. Norton is in some ways a very good programm but in other ways it is very restrictive and gives you less possibilities just because symantec believes that you are a DAU (Dumbest Available User). Check this out and call back if it helps :)

Well, thanks again but I needed the program to work so bad I had to restore my computer to factory settings and guess what, it WORKED!!! I just got the computer a few days ago so not so many programs I can't live without and anyways I backed up my files in my ipod, so I think I'm covered. By the way, if you are the moderator here, I think we should put this topic in FAQ mode so users that have the same problem can benefit from it instead of having to search through google and wasting valuable time. Thanks again and to Sharley too.

PS: DAU?? Lololol  ... Thats a first! A note to microsoft(symantec),
NOT everybody smokes pot on a daily basis, most of us that purchase systems are actually focused in one way or the other (can't speak for the hackers 8)

No, I'm not a mod in this Forum, you can see it by checking my Usernamecolor, it is blue like your own, not green or orange.
I'm glad that the old how-to-fix-a-problem-in-windows-workaround is still working, just reinstall windows and everything's fine ;)
And I'm glad to see you happy without even touching you :D
