XAMPP 2012: What we are planning?

Here's a short overview of what we are planning for the win32 package in 2012.

1) XAMPP Control Panel 3 as first maintenance release and the default panel.

2) The replacement of the Mercury mail server with XAMPP mail. XAMPP mail will be a a simple mail socket service for writing mails to hard disk or to redirect mails to another mail account.

3) Optional: Adding Python with mod_wsgi as another programming language. Python is a perfect complement to PHP (web) for system solutions. With, for example Django, Python also has a good web framework. Note that Ruby with Ruby on Rails already has a nice easy install package for the web context, yet Python does not at this point in time.

4) Optional: We will evaluate another installer system. Until then we will continue to use the NullSoft Installer.

does this mean that or messages in mercury mail server will be gone or would they be transferred to the new server?

All new mails especially via web forms will send over the new mail server. For the older mails you can still use Mercury if you want.

Hello Kay,

Because I have several XAMPP versions installed for testing I have each version installed to their own version folder for example...
version 1.7.7 installed to G:\xampp177
...which breaks most of the perl .bat and .pm file functions because they contain the preferred installation location path of the xampp folder, for example:
#!\xampp\perl\bin

This is not adjusted by the use of the setup_xampp.bat file or the installer, which is a real shame as the bat and installer are the perfect medium for making the custom path adjustments as they do throughout the rest of the XAMPP components.

Some 2447 matches for the path \xampp\ and /xampp/ were found when I last did a search.

This came to light when I needed to run ppm.bat and cpan.bat to test a posters issues.

This hard coding in Perl breaks the ability to add new modules and much more.

I doubt if there is anything you can do about this for the next release, is there?

Best wishes. :)

Curious, why drop Mercury?

Because it is too bulky and too difficult to configurate for a local development environment.

Hi

(Like your software and use it all of the time) Thanks!

A ? -- Just noticed that php 5.4 got released today (Mar 1 2012). Any plans to incorporate this into Xampp anytime soon (in your next beta?), since this is such an important release of the product as I want to move to this release for the performance gains?

TIA for any info. Cheers from Huntington Beach, USA. //GregH

Is there a timeframe from xampp 2012? And when will the decision be made as to whether python will be included? The postings that I have tried so far have not worked in getting python to add-on properly.

I think, that option 3) (Python ) will be most valuable at this point .
And it will give the real evolution of XAMPP as a platform for web application development .

Best regards

Could you add Firebird to the package also with php extensions enabled interbase and firebird_pdo?

You get my vote for python also i think a cool virtenv setup would be easier for windows users

I use pythonbrew to isolate various versions of python on my machine
