I evidently made a mistake when I installed XAMPP on my server - it also has IIS installed. I attempted this as an effort to install joomla 1.7, but no success there either. So I attempted to uninstall XAMPP, and reading the wiki went to the uninstall.exe and ran as administrator - just crashes and says ua has stopped working...

SOLVED: I just rebooted the server and the uninstall worked...I am again awed by the program's functionality and robustness!
