Why is MySQL database not activeated.

Hello everyone
My first time using xampp, this is for my web server development/managing course. I am using Vista 64bit and some reason that I cant fine MySQL database is deactivated when I check my status on my localhost. Had to diable UCA which allowed Apache to run, but I can figure the database issue out. Any help would be appreciated. TY
