Dreaded Error 2002 - Apologies for another post but....

Postby corkyo4 » 27. July 2011 08:28

Hi,

I have searched on this forum already regarding this error but im sill confused and no further forward in solving this.

I am totally new to the idea of running servers and totally new to the code etc associated with this, but im willing to learn as they say. I have installed XAMPP to allow me to run a version of CS-Cart on my home PC rather than a webserver elsewhere.

Following the instructions of CS-cart i am told to install XAMPP and then using http://localhost/phpmyadmin create a MySql database. On trying to do this is get the Error 2002 and a message as below;

#2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)

Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

I had both the apache and MySql servers running through the control panel and the status is as below;

httpd state 1 service 0 start 0 thread 170 op 0 port 80
mysql state 1 service 0 start 0 thread 160 op 0 port 3306
ftp state 0 service 0 start 0 thread 0 op 0 port 21
mercury state 0 service 0 start 0 thread 0 op 0 port 25

Loading up the apache control panel works, but phpmyadmin doesnt. One other thing to note when clicking on the admin but for MySql nothing happens. I dont know whether i should run anything as a service???

So far i have tried the following;
- restarting both the apache and MySql servers several times
- reinstalling XAMPP from a complete uninstallation
- from reading severla guides and forums on the internet i have tried coding out of the config php file using // the username and password lines
- i have switched off my firewall and double checked to makesure the windows firewall is off

Thinking this was a simple connectioon error i was convinced that making sure my firewall allowed access would work, but it didnt.

Having read solutions here viewtopic.php?f=16&t=47332 and viewtopic.php?f=16&t=47645&p=182758&hilit=error+2002#p182758 but i have yet to try these.

Reading that another user had issues with his firewall i am optimistic that it could still be this, however i did literally exit the firewall program so it seems unlikely.

I am a novice when it comes to servers and code etc so any solutions would need to be kept simple.

Apologies for another Error 2002 thread but i wanted to explain my situation as opposed to hijack somone else' problem.

Thanks

Tom

Hello Tom,

First I recommend you use the new XAMPP Control panel, link in my signature.

Download and extract the xampp_control3.exe file only into your xampp installation folder and use it instead of the CP included in the XAMPP release which has some bugs that don't seem evident in the new CP.

Using the old CP first Stop Apache and MySQL and then remove the ticks in the SVC check boxes.
Exit the old CP.

Start the new CP but do not tick any of the Services check boxes.

Start Apache and MySQL.

When both are running you can then click on the Admin buttons of Apache and MySQL.

Apache Admin should open the orange Welcome page.

MySQL Admin should open phpMyAdmin.

See if you can now move on.

Good luck.

Ok,

Having installed the new control panel i start both the apache and mysql servers, the following appears;

17:48:12 [main] Initializing main
17:48:12 [main] Windows version: 6.1 (build 7601) - Service Pack 1
17:48:12 [main] Xampp version: 1.7.4

17:48:12 [main] Running as admin - good!
17:48:12 [main] Working with basedir: "c:\xampp\"
17:48:16 [main] Initializing moduls
17:48:16 [main] Starting check-timer

17:48:22 [apache] Status change detected: running
17:48:27 [mysql] Starting mysql app...
17:48:27 [mysql] Status change detected: running

I click on the admin button for the mysql and i receive the exact same error as before, again i have tried this without my firewall being on but this does not solve it.

The error log file for mysql is included below;

All indications in your last post suggest that MySQL is up and running waiting for a connection.

You should no longer be running MySQL or Apache as a Windows Service, is that correct?

Did you do this my.ini file edit as mentioned in the topic you said that you had tried everything from:
viewtopic.php?p=176527#p176527
viewtopic.php?p=158841#p158841

Remember to save the file and to restart MySQL after editing configuration files.

Clear your browser's temporary Internet Files cache.

Now try and access phpMyAdmin either from the new CP or by going to http://localhost/phpmyadmin in your browser.

You can also check the MySQL section in http://localhost/xampp/phpinfo.php and look for the item:
mysql.default_socket
After the above edits it should read MySQL.

While you are in the phpinfo page look for this line near the top:
Loaded Configuration File
It should have, in a default installation:
C:\xampp\php\php.ini
Your path may be different if you installed XAMPP to a different location.

Next open the php.ini file mentioned above and look for these sections:
Code: Select all
; Default socket name for local MySQL connects.  If empty, uses the built-in
; MySQL defaults.
; http://php.net/mysql.default-socket
mysql.default_socket = "MySQL"

; Default socket name for local MySQL connects.  If empty, uses the built-in
; MySQL defaults.
; http://php.net/mysqli.default-socket
mysqli.default_socket = "MySQL"
Confirm that both entries match the above code.

Let me know back what you now find (all references to the default socket should now be MySQL).

No matter what I do, I can't seem to replicate this issue to give me a 2002 error message
So my conclusion, if all the above socket data matches then it has to be an issue with your particular PC - firewall, antivirus or some other MS security update that has screwed up somewhere.

Take a look in the Windows Event Viewer under Applications and or Security and see if there is any entries for mysql(d) or phpMyAdmin just after you have tried to access phpMyAdmin.

EDIT: please see additions below, i have since made further progress and now have access to a login page.

Ok just to confirm a few things.

The only thing i have tried in the links i posted is to modify the ini file to reflect, socket = "MySQL" other than that i have not yet tried anything else from these threads.

From the things you have suggested here are the outcomes;

You can also check the MySQL section in http://localhost/xampp/phpinfo.php and look for the item:
mysql.default_socket
After the above edits it should read MySQL. Yes this reads MYSQL

While you are in the phpinfo page look for this line near the top:
Loaded Configuration File
It should have, in a default installation:
C:\xampp\php\php.ini
Your path may be different if you installed XAMPP to a different location. Yes this is correct and in the same location you state.

Next open the php.ini file mentioned above and look for these sections: I confirm these are the same

Having tried this the error still remains.

I have read another post and you requested their config.inc.php file so here is mine;

Code: Select all
<?php
/*
 * This is needed for cookie based authentication to encrypt password in
 * cookie
 */
$cfg['blowfish_secret'] = 'xampp'; /* YOU SHOULD CHANGE THIS FOR A MORE SECURE COOKIE AUTH! */
/*
 * Servers configuration
 */
$i = 0;
/*
 * First server
 */
$i++;
/* Authentication type and info */
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'config';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['connect_type'] = 'tcp';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['compress'] = false;
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'root';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = '';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['extension'] = 'mysql';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['AllowNoPassword'] = true;
/* User for advanced features */
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['controluser'] = 'pma';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['controlpass'] = '';
/* Advanced phpMyAdmin features */
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['pmadb'] = 'phpmyadmin';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['bookmarktable'] = 'pma_bookmark';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['relation'] = 'pma_relation';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['table_info'] = 'pma_table_info';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['table_coords'] = 'pma_table_coords';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['pdf_pages'] = 'pma_pdf_pages';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['column_info'] = 'pma_column_info';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['history'] = 'pma_history';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['designer_coords'] = 'pma_designer_coords';
/* rajk - for blobstreaming */
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['bs_garbage_threshold'] = 50;
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['bs_repository_threshold'] = '32M';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['bs_temp_blob_timeout'] = 600;
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['bs_temp_log_threshold'] = '32M';
/*
 * End of servers configuration
 */
?>

EDIT: Following on from this i have changed the auth type to cookie and i now have access to the myphpadmin login page, asking for a username and password. I dont have a username and password how do i set these? if i click go without using the correct information i get the error 2002 complete with a language selection option, the username and password boxes and then the connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed, message again.

Thanks

Tom

Tom, try change this line
Code: Select all
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'config';
to
Code: Select all
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'cookie';
save it and restart MySQL and Apache if you can.

It just a guess that may change how phpMyAdmin is started.

Edit:
Tom, use root as the username and leave the password blank.

The password can be set for root from http://localhost/security
C:\xampp\readme_en.txt file.

Would it be necessary to stipulate a username and password in the config.inc.php file. I have edited the config file (based on another forum read) and commented out using // the lines under /* User for advanced features */ and /* Advanced phpmyadmin features */

The error still remains but i now dont get the comment, Connection for control user as defined in your configuration failed. i just get #2002 Cannot log in to the mysql server. (if that helps)

Re: Dreaded Error 2002 - Apologies for another post but....

Postby corkyo4 » 28. July 2011 13:39

I got it working temporarily

Here is was i did.

As suggested above, i changed the sockets in my.ini to MySQL i changed auth_type to cookie - this didnt work BUT

under the hosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc i have been able to modify the local host address to 127.0.0.1 since i have read that sometimes windows doesnt identify that localhost should be 127.0.0.1. Having modified the file so that i have

127.0.0.1 localhost

i managed to log in once, but some reason it has now stopped working and gone back to where i was before (at the login page)

EDIT: Ok this time i have it running, i have done this, "The problem was resolved as soon as I put a "bind-address=127.0.0.1" configuration parameter in the [mysqld] section of the "my.ini" configuration file (<xampp-install-folder>\mysql\bin\my.ini) and restarted MySQL on the Xampp control panel. Now phpMyAdmin works whether the PC is connected to its local network or not." - from here viewtopic.php?f=16&t=47645

it works now

Thanks for the help, im sure ill be back if i get stuck!!
