Recompile php with --enable-gd-jis-conv for xampp

I'm really enjoying xampp and CodeIgniter, however I now need to be able to create images with Japanese characters using PHP.

From what I have discovered you need to recompile php with the --enable-gd-jis-conv option.

I've searched through google a lot but just can't find a solution that I understand - it seems I'm just too much of a newbie.

I've started downloading microsoft visual studio because I read it can be used to compile php
(according to http://bobobobo.wordpress.com/2008/05/27/how-to-compile-php/).

Can someone please guide me!
