http://localhost rejects XAMPP

Hi
I have tried to load XAMPP 3 times, and did follow forum instructions on the reload.
Still Http://localhost/ will not function.
My Firefox browser says

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

IE does not find anything wrong but won't work.

I assume the infamous Port 80 ? is otherwise occupied but have no way of knowing if so or not.
Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Open your XAMPP Control Panel.
Are there green "running" indications at Apache and MySQL?
Have you set any of the Svc Checkboxes there?

If Apache and MySQL have green running indications:
Can you request the XAMPP Administration Panel with http://127.0.0.1/xampp/ ?

Is your Firefox running in Offline Mode?
Have you installed any Security Software?
Which OS do you use?
Which XAMPP Version do you use?

MUCH MORE INFORMATION!

Hi guys,
having same issue:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

XAMPP Control Panel Version 2.5
Windows 6.1 Build 7600 Platform 2
Current Directory: c:\xampp
Install (er) Directory: c:\Xampp
Status Check OK
Apache started (Port 80)
MySql Started (Port 3306)

Can access control panel via 127.0.0.1 but not via http:\\localhost path...
Address bar auto changes to: http://www.localhost.com/
Firefox returns: The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

As far as aware Firefox running in ONLINE mode (internet is fine!)

Any and all assistance much appreciated!

Have tried uninistalling and reinstalling XAMPP, installed to different drive, uninstalled, reinstalled accepting all defaults and still no joy!

No Svc boxes are ticked...

running Status returns the following:
XAMPP Application Status 1.1.2.2
http State 1 Service 0 Start 0 Thread 164 0p 0 Port 80
mysql State 1 Service 0 Start 0 Thread 170 0p 0 Port 3306
ftp State 0 Service 0 State 0 Thread 0 0p 0 Port 21
mercury State 0 Service 0 Start 0 Thread 0 0p 0 Port 25

XAMPP was working quick OK up until 2-3 days ago, only change I can think of was I have installed CS5...could this be something to do with Dreamweaver's new CMS setup - faux apache installation?

Security Software is Windows Firewall & AVG Free Antivirus

Further note...

can access 127.0.0.1\XAMPP OK, get the standard:
Welcome to XAMPP for Windows!
Congratulations:
You have successfully installed XAMPP on this system!
Now you can start using Apache and Co. You should first try »Status« on the left navigation to make sure everything works fine.
For OpenSSL support please use the test certificate with https://127.0.0.1 or https://localhost
Good luck, Kay Vogelgesang + Kai 'Oswald' Seidler

however, when trying to access PHPmyAdmin, the following error is returned:
Error
MySQL said: Documentation
#2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

And, as already mentioned, unable to access https://localhost
not sure if helps to shed a little more light on the situation?

Apache started [Port 80]

If Apache and MySQL have green running indications: No, but the Admin panel says they are activated

Okay, if http://127.0.0.1/xampp/ is working for you, than it is a DNS problem.

Please take a look into your %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. Thats the file Vista uses to do something like a basic DNS.
