Try this instead http://localhost/

Read Step3: in the \xampp\readme_en.txt file.

Sorry I should have explained better!

I already see the welcome page and the list to the left with Welcome, Status, Security and so on.
I have no problem getting that page. I have used https://127.0.0.1 or https://localhost.

My problem is I created a folder within xampp and htdocs called myphp. xampp/htdocs/myphp and files within that directory called index, login, member, logout and register all php extensions. When I check the status it says MySQL database ACTIVATED
PHP ACTIVATED
HTTPS (SSL) ACTIVATED
Common Gateway Interface (CGI) ACTIVATED
Server Side Includes (SSI) ACTIVATED

But if I type in the browser url: http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/ or http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/ myphp/register.php Instead of giving me the index of htdocs or the output on the browser of the register.php page I get:

Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Error 404

localhost
05/05/2011 23:46:38
Apache/2.2.17 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.2.17 OpenSSL/0.9.8o PHP/5.3.4 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.1

I must be messing up somewhere but where I don't know. This is the first time I have used xampp and it's driving me mad. If I use my online server the php files work fine.

Sure, you don't seem to know anything about the URI to path structure of your Apache Server. Your URL is wrong!

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#1168 says:
...The main directory for all WWW documents is \xampp\htdocs. If you put a file "test.html" in this directory, you can access it with the URI "http://localhost/test.html"...

That would be clear if you take a look into your \xampp\apache\logs\error.log file where all of your HTTP 404 Error codes will give you more information about the expected file paths your apache can't find.

You are quite correct I don't know anything about the apache server. It is the first time I have used anything like this. All I have ever done is used html and an online server. Now I am trying to learn php and this is the reason for me using xampp so please be kind and don't shout at me too much for being a dope newbie!! Thank you for your reply and I will try to get it correct. I have been watching php tutorials on youtube to help me learn and they were using more directories than just the htdocs directory. But one question.... How come if I type in: http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/ do I get the 404 error? I am trying to understand, honestly!
Kind regards, James.

James.

You are welcome. Some thing you can learn best if you solve it nearly or partly by your own instead of giving you the answer directly ;-)
Have fun with XAMPP and all the stuff and come back if you have any problem you can't solve by your own.
I wish you all the best 8)
