Unable to access localhost after installing XAMPP

When attempting to access the localhost after installing XAMPP and starting apache and mysql, I get the following error:

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost."

I have changed the port for Skype and closed it, tried disabling my firewall, and even changed my localhost port for apache to 8080 to see if that would work, but nothing has helped.

I'm using XAMPP 1.7.3 on a Vista 64 bit system.

Any suggestions?
