I have installed a portable version of XAMPP to a usb stick by decompressing the 7z file to the root of the stick, taking the default names for everything.

When I run xampp-control.exe I get a pop up box:
XAMPP Control
XAMPP Component Status Check Failure [24].
Current Directory: E:\xampp
Run this program only from your XAMPP root directory
OK Cancel

Clicking OK correctly starts the control panel, although initial messages are as follows:

XAMPP Control Panel Version 2.5 (9. May, 2007)
Windows 5.2 Build 3790 Platform 2 Sevice Pack 2
Current Directory: E:\xampp
Install(er) Directory: e:\xampp
ERROR: Status Check Failure [24]
This program must run from your XAMPP root directory.

The control panel then functions as would be expected, i.e. you can start and stop Apache and MySQL as required - everything works correctly.

It appears there is a problem with the drive letter appearing as upper case in current directory and lower case in the installer record. Whilst it does not stop XAMPP from working, it is slightly annoying - are there any fixes for this?

Edit: Note I have NOT run any configuration scripts (as recommended for a portable installation)

I am getting the very same error and behaviors but not through a portable USB install, but by using the *.exe installer to C:\XAMPP (default location). XAMPP does seem to run fine so far.

try installing the new XAMPP Control Panel

Kyle, you may download the latest version 3 XAMPP Control Panel from here,,,

...which should fix your issue and possibly others that have not yet appeared.

It may be worth bookmarking or even subscribing to the above links so you can keep a watch out for any upgrades or for, perhaps, the latest news on this subject as the developer of this version is quite active in the above linked forum topic.

Hopefully this version of the XCP will be included in the next stable release as it's far superior to any of the previously released control panels.

Sharley, JonB; much thanks. I've downloaded and installed the new control panel. I see some nice UI improvements to the control panel as well!
