apache keeps increasing memory usage, is this normal?

Hello,

Lately I have been having problems with apache which seem to relate to memory usage. I bought a new machine but the problem seems to resist. I just noticed 1 of the 2 apache processes was using 190 mb while the site hasn't had that much traffic at all since apache restarted this morning.

I never saw that high a figure before if I recall correctly.

Did some testing.. Just using a script with the line <? phpinfo();?> apache uses almost 1 mb and never seems to release that memory. Just surfing to the frontpage of my punbb forum takes about 6 mb.

Are these normal figures and why is that memory not released?

Thanks.

(trying to stay with xampp instead of just putting ubuntu on it)
