A -- well, you should look in \xammp\php
B -- use a programmers text editor like Notepad++ or Crimson Editor

You should have created a new topic rather than post in here as not knowing where the php.ini file is not an issue with 1.7.4, is it?

Make sure Apache and MySQL in XAMPP are running then go to:
http://localhost/xampp/phpinfo.php

Look for the item Loaded Configuration File and it will tell you what you want to know and also provides all the information you need to know about your php installation settings.

NOTE:
Please do not cross post or double post in the Apache Friends Forums as it is deemed to be bad forum etiquette - see link in my signature.
Therefore, could you please delete your other related post in the other forum...

...which, by the way, is a German only language forum.
Thanks.

You don't seem to want to follow forum advice, do you? do you honestly believe people will help you when you won't follow simple instructions :?:

Please delete your other thread/topic and then create a new topic for your mail() issue as it is off topic in here, then you may be given some help.
I won't help you with your mail() issue in this forum, and I hope that no one else will either as you need to start learning how to follow instructions so we have a smooth running forum.

After reading through this thread, I felt it should be noted that just because this software is 32 bit does not mean it won't run on 64 bit versions of Windows. In fact, there is very little reason to have 64 bit versions of many programs, even on a 64 bit OS. For some reason, people fail to understand this, which is why even Microsoft has had to explain over and over that most people don't need the 64 bit version of Office, and that there isn't much point in having a 64 bit version of Visual Studio (although the IDE is 32 bit, you can compile 64 bit apps just fine).

Sorry if it's just because I'm not seeing something but after hours of searching this forum, I found this thread.
Let me say firstly that I'm an admitted noob and only downloaded xampp so that I could learn php.

Sharley, I clicked the localhost link above and got this message:
Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. The link on the referring page seems to be wrong or outdated. Please inform the author of that page about the error.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Error 404

Apache/2.2.17 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.2.17 OpenSSL/0.9.8o PHP/5.3.4 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.1

I've looked through the xampp/php file for the php.ini file but as hamza pointed out above, I only found the php.ini-development and php.ini-production files he did but no php.ini file.
Is there someplace I can download a copy or am I simply missing something?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Note: The issue I had that led me here is actually that when I try to display a php file one of three things happens:0
1. The page is blank
2. The actual script shows
3. <?php

echo "<h1>Hello World!</h1>";

?>
...displays Hello World! >";

and @ altrea: yes, I used windows search and it returned no results :(

The link is now fixed.

Dragon7s wrote:I've looked through the xampp/php file for the php.ini
In a default XAMPP 1.7.4 installation the php.ini file is located in C:\xampp\php\ folder.

If there is no php.ini file, is there just a php file with no extension?

If so then you will need to find the Windows setting that permits you to see all file extensions on your PC - usually Control Panel>Folder Options>View...
...then remove the tick in the Hide extensions for known file types.

Check again if you now have a php.ini file and then try and start Apache and MySQL again - PHP will not run if the php.ini file is not named correctly or is missing entirely which seems to be related to your main issue (not a 1.7.4 specific issue).

If it is still not found then you have a corrupt installation and would need to uninstall the current installation completely and download a fresh file and install again.

After uninstalling the current version, you could try an alternative method by downloading and extracting the ZIP version and then to complete the ZIP method you would need to run the C:\xampp\setup_xampp.bat file to have all the paths set correctly.

Your issue, like the other related poster made, is not XAMPP 1.7.4 related as clearly the php.ini file is included in all XAMPP 1.7.4 releases and indeed in all XAMPP releases as without it PHP, one of it's main components, will simply fail to run, but rather it is related to a Windows OS setting issue and should therefore have been posted in a separate topic entirely.

It's not a windows issue...the file is not 'showing' (not sure where it is but it is verified by the corrected link.
It's certainly not in the xampp/php folder.

I uninstalled the xampp installer version and used the .zip version and now it's working better except......it's still not reading .php files correctly. *sigh*
While I did state that I was a noob, that only referred to my use of wampp and learning php.
I've been working online for several years in customer service and marketing and your snarky response is very much unappreciated.
I will continue working with xampp to further my skills but I won't be back here for advice if that's how you treat new people looking for help.
(FWIW, I also administer an online forum, with over 2.5 million posts, so I know a bit about helping out new people. ;) )
Best of luck and feel free to delete my account....I won't be back.

I now have successfully got everything I need working on Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit. I've had most of it working for a few months, but yesterday got MySQL working as well, so I can use Wordpress (I use ODBC with a different database for other things, but it's not compatible with Wordpress). I've used previous versions of XAMPP, but have never had as much trouble getting everything working. Part of it is this new version of XAMPP, but part of it has been related to the OS I'm using (it's basically the server version of Windows 7, for those that aren't familiar with it).

Anyway, part of the trouble I had in specifically getting MySQL to work with PHP is that the docs make it sound as if it should be working right out of the box, since it is now built in. It turns out you still have to turn it on in the php.ini file.

Also, many of the sample php pages in the XAMPP folder no longer work. It appears that it's because the php portions are not being processed. For some reason, they start with just "<?" instead of "<?php" and that seems to be the problem. Is there some setting that needs to be changed to tell php about the different syntax?

Interesting. I've been using PHP off and on for several years and have never encountered short opening tags that I can remember (I do programming in so many different languages that it's hard to remember things like that sometimes, though). I assume it's considered poor style, so perhaps it would be a good idea to fix the XAMPP pages for future versions? :)

That depends. In HTML view / template files it is good style because of far better readability.
