Go back to 1.7.3 if you were happy using that version until the developers read these forums and decide to do a more thorough testing of 1.7.4 release.
Hopefully they will realize that this 1.7.4 release is a backward step and requires much more work and testing to make it a usable release - 1.7.4a and 1.7.4b would be the result of much more work so wait until you see these patch release before commiting to the 1.7.4 release.
I repeat for others reading this topic:
Not Win7 and not 64 bit compatible but also much more than that is amiss with this version release.
Please add your 1.7.4 experiences and comments here:

Thank you, Sharley. I am able to bypass the error of 'Status Check Failure [3]' by reinstalling the package using the zipped file instead of the installer.

Well, I don't want to accuse anyone, but I think someone could test it before to release it...
It's a little bit amazing that in 2011 something is not compatible with Win7 or 64bit OS.
Just my 2 cents.

Another thank you to Sharley and a FYI
I'm running Win 7 32 bit and also ran into the same problem. I followed the info about uninstalling the .exe installer and used the zip file to install and the problem was eliminated.
Again thank you.

I received same error - how i managed to avoid it: (my skype is not @ port 80, win7 x64 here)
-uninstalled .exe version 1.7.4, (before that 'course saved my databases and htdocs dir
);
-downloaded .zip 1.7.4;
-extract -> setup-xammp.bat -> xampp-control.exe
And everything works fine

Hello,
I was reading the post and decided to enter
http://localhost in the browser.
Then the IIS page was opened.
I uninstalled IIS and rebooted the windows 7.
Ran the XAMPP (the error continued), but Apache was started.

I'm having the same frustrating error.
I changed httpd.conf to:
#Listen 0.0.0.0:81
#Listen [::]:81
Listen 81
But it stays trying on port 80 ...
Don't know whether it has anything to do with it or not ...

That seems to work; clearing the "Start-In" field in the properties of the shortcut to "xampp-control"

lol ok i was a bit too quick there; it just got rid of the error message. But of course, then it couldn't locate the installer package directory.
