I have the same problem! But no solution :(

When I try to start XAMPP Control Panel I get the following error:

XAMPP Component Status Check failure [3]. Current directory: d:\xampp
Run this program only from your XAMPP root directory.

Shortcut: D:\xampp\xampp-control.exe with path d:\xampp

The same happens if I try to run xampp-control.exe directly from the installation folder.

After the start-up it is not possible to control Apache or / and MySQL. I get the following error: ERROR: -1

If I choose to run the program as administrator I get the same start-up error. But after start-up I can control Apache and MySql. But it is a little bit unstable. The best way at the moment to control Apache and MySql is with the Windows services.

For a long time I run XAMPP 1.7.3. With this version I had no such problems. When 1.7.4 was released I removed 1.7.4 and installed 1.7.4. I did a fresh installation.

Technical information: Xampp 1.7.4 Windows, OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits.

@ jfpannone - Which XAMPP version are you using?

Did you download and install using the zip files or the installer file?

Did you run the setup_xampp.bat file after installing XAMPP?

If not then run it now and try again.

Good luck.

I'm having the same prob, too^^
Just installed v1.7.4 on D:\server\xampp. When starting control panel, this warning pops out:
---------------------------
XAMPP Control
---------------------------
XAMPP Component Status Check failure [3].

Current directory: D:\server\xampp

Run this program only from your XAMPP root directory.

Running setup_xampp.bat it says there's nothing to do...

Win7 x64 here

I also tried setup_xampp.bat and got the same answer.

Maybe XAMPP Control Panel does not like 64-bits?

I also tried XAMPP Control Panel from XAMPP 1.7.3. It startet without errors, but I did not manage to start / stop services. I got error -1.

Hi Sharley,

XAMPP 1.7.4. I just ran setup_xampp.bat, but still same problem.

I can't see how this error is effecting anything, but then again i just installed yesterday. Does anyone even know what that paticular error means?

I've similar problem:

At start XAMPP Control Panel throws an error, but still everything seems to work. However starting and stopping apache/mysql is quiet "unstable" e.g. XAMPP CP in log writes "Apache stopped" while Apache is still running.

Here's my log from XAMPP Control Panel just after start:
Code: Select all
XAMPP Control Panel Version 2.5 (9. May, 2007)
Windows 6.1 Build 7600 Platform 2
Curreent Directory: C:\xampp
Install(er) Directory: C:\xampp
ERROR: Status Check Failure [1635760]
This program must be run from your XAMPP root directory

I've tried everything, installing XAMPP as Administrator, running Control panel as Administrator, nothing helps. It happens on my both PCs.

This can be helpfull: when i move "xampp-control.exe" to any another directory, XAMPP Control Panel stops throwing an error! But it can't start any services.
Code: Select all
Instatall(er)) Directory: No installer package found
Status Check OK

PS. As always: Sory for my english :)

Check if you have Skype running. Skype use the same port. Try close Skype session, and then start XAMPP, and Apache Server.

Look in the xampp\apache\logs\error.log file and see if there is an [error] relating to port conflicts.

You can also configure Skype not to use port 80 and port 443 and select another port for Skype to use and that will allow Skype and Apache to co-exist quite happily. :)

Best wishes.

This from the readme_en.txt file in the 1.7.4 release but not yet displayed on the home page you download the 1.7.4 files from.
readme_en.txt file wrote:* System Requirements:

+ 64 MB RAM (RECOMMENDED)
+ 350 MB free fixed disk
+ Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP (RECOMMENDED), VISTA
+ Only 32 Bit (NOT for 64 bit systems)

Good luck with 1.7.4.

Hmm, this looks shameful. They don't even mention Win7 on the OS list :D
Jeez, does that mean we need to downgrade to good ol' XP that were released 10 years ago? :D
Win7 is the thing that developers should concern, especially 64bit, as Win7 is the last Win OS to be available in both 32bit and 64bit...

The same problem I got with Win7, 64 bit and xampp 1.7.4.

Before I used xampp 1.7.3, wich was working with Win7, 64 bit.

When I wanted to install MediaWiki on that system, I got the the system requirement:
PHP version 5.1 or later (5.2.x recommended). PHP 5.3.1 is incompatible with MediaWiki due to a bug (That didn’t work with xampp 1.7.3, because there is PHP 5.3.1 in use) :(

So I was happy when I found, that xampp 1.7.4 is using PHP 5.3.5. :)

Now I have to install version 1.7.3 again and have to find software to change the version of PHP. I remember I saw one site with such a tool, but forgot where.

Does anybody know this site or any other solution?
Many thanks
Mumken :)

This happens if you have an incorrectly configured and H HTPD.conf file find an an original and restore it. it can be found in C:\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf :D

what happens? mediawiki incompatibility? or original error, Status Check Failure [3]? if original, i dont see how this can be true (for this instance, anyway), as i haven't touched the HTPD.conf file.

Look in the xampp\apache\logs\error.log file and see if there is an [error] relating to port conflicts.

Sharley,
I don't use skype, but i use synergy software to manage my keyboard and mouse over the network. But that operates on Port 24800. I also stopped all services/processes that would be using any ports and the error still occurs.

I took a look at the error log, per your suggestion, and pasted it below. I opened control panel and receive error, but nothing else is written to error log.

Code: Select all

This all may be moot, as I'm answering this question after you have posted info about XAMPP 1.7.4 not made for 64 bit OS.
