What is the preferred version to upgrade to from 1.7.0

Hello,

I read not so nice things about 1.7.3 and 1.7.4.
A pity.
I am running 1.7.0 for quite some time. I tried 1.7.3 but I got 'weird things' (tm) like some pages on my lan not being served, couldn't find any cause, and quickly went back to my old working copy.

So my question, which version is preferred. I even would like a statement like '1.7.0 is fine, no need to upgrade'!

Thanks, Jean.

That depends on your needs.

XAMPP can be used as testing or developement environment. Therefor it should come as close as possible to your live server components. If your Live-Server uses PHP 5.2.X then maybe XAMPP 1.7.1 is the best solution for you (or 1.7.0, thats fine too).

If you want to test your scripts with PHP 5.3 then you maybe want to use XAMPP 1.7.3 which comes with PHP 5.3.1 and is very stable too (but PHP 5.3.1 cannot be used with some scripts because of a PHP Bug in the PHP 5.3.1 __call method. So if you uses mediawiki, you maybe want to use XAMPP 1.7.2 which comes with PHP 5.3.0).

You can check the Apache, PHP and MySQL Bug tracking tools and/or changelog, too. Maybe there are some important or interesting reports for you too, which can affect your decision which XAMPP version to use too.

But at the end, its your very own decision. If your system runs well, than maybe its a good idea to "never touch a running system" :D

Thanks.

You are right, I could check changelogs, and I admit I am a bit lazy to check them all.

I don't have much need for testing scripts against a new php version. Stability or severe performances issues would be another thing but as everything goes nicely and you don't seem to imply that there is some really big improvement.. I've got enough other things to do. So in fact it was the answer I was hoping for. :)

Greets.

Jean, you can of course download and install as many XAMPP versions as you like.

Just install each to a different named folder as XAMPP does not rely on the registry until, that is, you install a Windows service, for example xampp163a - xampp170 - xampp173 etc. get the idea?

Your 1.7.0 version would remain with the default folder name of xampp so it is easy to determine which is your currently preferred version and all the installed versions can be on one partition or drive.

I have installed on various drives and partitions all releases from 1.6.3a up to the latest 1.7.4 (yuk) that I use for testing and trying to solve issues that arise in these forums.

I found upgrading to be too much of a hassle for the very limited benefit achieved, if any - example, this latest 1.7.4 offering. :(

I am using mostly 1.6.8 as I don't need the latest component versions for scripts etc. that I develop for production but it's nice to be able to easily test scripts using the various new component version releases as they arrive in XAMPP.

Obviously, because of port and other conflicts, you can only run one version at any one time...

...and I totally agree that if you are happy with 1.7.0 then stick with it especially now you have ironed out your 'moving to a new computer' pains. :)

Best wishes.

Thanks again Sharley,

Yes I know I can just install a map with xampp without any dependencies, I just copied that map from my old pc to the new one remember.

Unlike you I don't have much reason to install different versions, I would only be interested in 'the lastest and the greatest' which is not exactly the right desciption for 1.7.4 as I understand it. :)

I now have a spare pc and can even experiment a bit with ubuntu lamp (on port 8080).

So all in all I'm a happy camper now.

Back to australian open.. :)

Good luck.
