Had a web maintenance task dumped into my lap. Will be using joomla. Am trying to create a system in order to "play" with it on my home PC. I downloaded and installed xampp
on my windows vista machine. The doc that I am using stated that xampp would show up in the system tray but it did not, it is on my desktop(no prob) the doc stated that I should enter http://localhost in my browser(mozilla firefox)....when I do, I receive an error that it can't be found, what is the problem and what can I do to correct it in order to proceed and install joomla.

Best Regards,
Bluesguy

Sharley,
Thanks for the reply but alas nothing was written to the error log file. This whole scene is brand new for me. I have been trying to execute what is in the doc that I downloaded.

You mean the log file is empty?

If so then Apache has not started as it creates entries upon starting.

Run \xampp\xampp-portcheck.exe to make sure all ports are free then try and start Apache and MySQL.

Open your XAMPP Control Panel and try and start Apache and MySQL - they will show a green running indication when started but first make sure there are no ticks in any of the Svc check boxes.

The official XAMPP installation instructions can be found here:

Do you mind telling the rest of the forum what you did to solve your problem?
Or at least provide a link to the post that helped solve your issues.

It is good forum etiquette to help others searching the forums for a solution to similar issues as yours. ;)

Sharley,
No problem: Read the post by Davidw(help please) and applied some old fashioned swagging.
Ran checkport for port verification
Checked the boxes in apache and mysql
started them running and entered http://localhost in my browser
was then good to go
