why the Control Panel doesn't talk to MySQL

The XAMPP Control Panel 2.5.8 (July 28 2009) doesn't have full control. (MS Windows XP SP3 incl. all updates)

Starting the Apache Server with the Control Panel worked fine. The panel correctly indictated "running" with a green flag for the Apache.

However starting the MySQL with the Control Panel button didn't have any effect. Neither the deamon was started nor was it indicatled as running.
But using the little batch job "mysql_start.bat" worked fine and the MySQL deamon was started.
But it still was not indicated as running by the Control Paned despite it WAS running now.
Consequently I can't use the Control Panel button to admin or stop the MySQLd.exe deamon.

Are there any ideas, why the Control Panel doesn't talk to MySQL while the batch jobs are doing their job fine ?

If you are going to ask fairly technical questions at least spell correctly...

it's 'daemon'.

The word "daemon" actually comes from the Greek language, meaning an "inner or attendant spirit" (Oxford American Dictionary). This is a fitting name, as a computer daemon is a constantly running program that triggers actions when it receives certain input.

Also - its a lot easier to state the XAMPP version number, as there it only one CP version per release, then 'everyone' will know what you are talking about. XAMPP 1.7.3 - we suppose.

Now for the answer part... (but we need a few answers first)

A. - Has MySQL been previously installed or is there still another existing installation of MySQL on your machine?

B. - Are you running MySQL and/or Apache as services?

I'm bettin my Guiness that 'A' - gets an affirmative answer, but we will have to see.
