Storage Setup

The absence of required XAMPP setup is great. However, I would like to move my application specific storage (i.e., htdocs, databases, etc.) to a different device than the one where the software is installed. Is this as simple changing the native configuration files on my own. For example, can I edit the DocumentRoot root directive in httpd.conf without any unpleasant side affects? Similarly for MySQL, etc.?
