XAMPP and localhost problem

I'm totally new to all this but over the weekend I managed to get xampp working as such. Had to change the port to 8080 in 'httpd.conf' with Notepad.

Windows XP Pro SP 3
XAMPP installed on C:\XAMPP\...
IE 6

Simply when ever I type http://localhost
I get the IIS (win server) home page and not the xampp home.

or: http://localhost/xampp/ just states "page not found"

So I have missed something somewhere I know... But what?

I did the auto install. All I want to do is create a local server for PHP for testing ZenCart.

Any help would be welcome.... ready to give up

You missed to specify Port 8080 in the URL - if you dont specify any Port, then Port 80 is taken (what points to IIS).

Enter http://localhost:8080 or http://localhost:8080/xampp

Thanks for the pointer Nobbie.
Now when I use http://localhost:8080 I now get the "It Works" msg.... Cool

When I use http://localhost:8080/xampp I get a 404 (not found) msg

All directories are as normal and the conf file lists:
<Directory "C:/xampp/htdocs"> (as it is on my h/d dir)

Even appending the htdocs to the url I still get a 404 and not the index page.

Ok I managed to sort it and now get the index page... Greatttttt
Found I needed to make changes in the ssl

phpAdmin is now giving Access Denied (1045) password = No

Almost there lol
