Impossible to connect to the server

Hi everybody,

I'm a newbie of xampp but some days ago I followed a short guide managing to configure it. Everything seemed to be perfect, through http://localhost I was able to reach the documents I had put in xampp/htdocs, but when I tried to comunicate my IP adress to one of my friends in order to let him access and get the documents, he informed me that his browser wasn't able to connect to the server. I own up my ignorance, but I ask you to help me finding the possible problems at the base.

- What IP did you give him to connect to your server?

I don't need the number, rather what equipment it belongs to -

I think I gave him the dynamic IP; to be honest, in the guide I've mentioned there was a link to a site that shows automatically your IP adress; I think you know better than me what I'm talking about... but when I reach the documents on my computer I can just do that using the IPv4, I think it's quite obvious for you, but not for me, so I've tried many times using the IP I have read on that site to get the access on my documents but the answer was: unable to contact the server... at that time I tried the IPv4 numbers and magically it worked, but just on my computer because I've also communicated my IPv4 to my friend with no results!

You didn't mention whether you had or had not enabled port forwarding for Port 80 on your router.

Also - if you want to do this more than once or twice and you gave a dynamic IP, learn about Dynamic DNS -

No-IP and DynDNS are the two leaders on that.
