404 redirect

I have a few virtual hosts setup within my web server and would like to setup different custom 404 redirects for each virtual host. I've already researched this, but doesn't appear to be easy.
There's different options available like redirect and redirectmatch, but haven't been able to get them to work....
please advise what you've done to resolve. Maybe I'm spinning my wheels and the new SEO system will fix this ???
