phpMyAdmin username and root password

Hi
I install xammp and add a:
MySQL Super user: root
password
which is my 1and1 ftp pass word /
I go to phpMyAdim and the login page lists
user name and password?
running my email as username
all attempts to login fail...
where am I going wrong please?

The username is 'root', not your email address. No?
