from port 80 to port 8080 ---> help plz!

Greetings everyone,

I've been stuck on this problem for all day long. I recently purchased a domain at godaddy.com, http://www.francoisbolduc.ca. I decided to host it on my newly windows 2008 home web server. I run the latest XAMPP software.

But my ISP blocks prt 80, so i want to redirect it to port 8080. I did open the necessary ports on firewall and router. My website works perfect under this http://www.francoisbolduc.ca:8080

I guess you can see me coming right? I want my website to be accessible under http://www.francoisbolduc.ca . I read that i had to modify my httpf conf file. But i have no knowledge of Apache and I am a beginner to this stuff.

Would someone be kind enough to guide me ?

then you should consult help from xampp forums how to apply association rule so that you site run on port 80 but host on port 8080, of course w/o any port redirect service such as no-ip

Well this will be interesting.

To be honest, I have never heard of an ISP blocking port 80. In fact I'm not sure how you would do that without software installed on the client side. Port 80 is, after all, the default port for http traffic. (there are lots of other things I have never heard of )

I am not questioning your integrity or knowledge, but what makes you sure port 80 is blocked?

There's a very big missing piece here somewhere.

I actually had an ISP that blocked port 80 inbound. I imagine that they just configured there gateways to block it.
As for Francois' question, I'm not sure it can be done. I suppose depending on the DNS server you might be able to redirect :80 > :8080 but I'm just guessing. But I really can't imagine it's possible.
I got around it by using port 443, so I had an https address but no http address.

I guess they (an ISP) could block certain methods such as GET, HEAD, and POST for one side of the traffic, but I am in agreement with the "I don't see how this will work" aspect. (I'm basically hoping the info is wrong).

I can't see any way to have an HTTP request that doesn't use a non-standard port traverse that network. I'm not a definitive expert on DNS, but I know a fair amount and I'm not familiar with a way to change the default port for a host, but its interesting enough for a Google

Still, interesting And that was a clever workaround you did, too. I worked in a situation like that a while ago, (not for the same reason) and it made a lot of things ungodly awkward and/or slow.
