Upgrade has broken XAMPP

Postby designmerc » 11. May 2010 06:53

Hello there, first time poster. First of all I just wanted to say thanks to everyone at Apache Friends for making XAMPP available, I use it nearly every day and it's brilliant.

I am having a problem similar to what is described in this thread, in that I upgraded to 1.7.3 and am seeing the same error: http://community.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=39903&p=158346

This is the complete error which appears at the end of the installation in a terminal window:
Warning: require(C:\xampp\install\xampp_xampp.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\setup_xampp.bat on line 33

Fatal error: require(): Failed opening required 'C\xampp\install\xampp_xampp.php' (include_path='.;\pear') in C:\xampp\setup_xampp.bat on line 33

Press any key to continue...

The difference is that I already had XAMPP 1.7.1 installed on this machine (Vista Home Premium SP2) and had been using it for almost a year with no problems. I have several local DBs - Wordpress sites for theme development - within C:\xampp\htdocs\ and I'm wary of uninstalling XAMPP for fear that I will lose them. I can save the theme files of course, but losing the DBs would be pretty horrible.

What is my best course of action? Any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"mysqldump.exe" will create local database backups of your MySQL databases. (any of them)
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/mysqldump.html
You can also use phpMyAdmin, of course. Both produce the same output -- .sql or .csv files that can be ported or restored.

Also reading this in the WordPress Codex should be instructive:

Good Luck

One other thing, did you 'install over' your old installation?

Hi Jon, thanks for the response.

Unfortunately I did 'install over' my old installation - I assumed I was supposed to, since I was running an upgrade.

I will check out mysqldump.exe and the Codex entries you've mentioned, but I must confess that I'm very novice when it comes to phpMyAdmin, mySQL, and DBs in general. I know enough to get a Wordpress install running, but from there things get sketchy.

Good Luck marc

When you make the decision to DIY (do it yourself) on server software, backups double in their importance. There are some good plugins for WordPress to do backups 'right in' Wordpress.

This guys Database Manager is excellent

http://lesterchan.net/wordpress/2009/06 ... 09-update/

If you are building themes, don't forget to to backup (even if by copying) your wp-content folders. Your PHP, CSS fixes and images are NOT part of the databases. The databases ONLY contain the WP meta-data (the structure of the blog/CMS and administrative info) and the content - posts, pages, comments, authors etc.

Good luck again
:D

The mysql databases are at \xampp\mysql\data.
