Restricted area and MOD_AUTH_MYSQL

just installed this great package and everything seems to check out but for one thing. The restricted area on my localhost server isn't accepting the provided passwords on the test. I get a 401 error.
I've added the mod_auth_mysql to the apache http.conf and restarted the servers, as stated in the documentation but I've had no luck. I'm running Win 2000 and I know this is experimental. Any ideas anyone?
