XAMMP, mailserver and port 25

Hi,

I'm trying to teach myself php having set up XAMPP two days ago. Tonight I tried to use a php script that works on my web server but doesn't work on XAMMP on my PC. I got the following error message:-

Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in C:\xampp\htdocs\sendmail.php on line 8

I have searched the Forum for "port25" and there are only two posts which are in German. I noticed Mercury was mentioned in one of them so I switched Mercury on and tried again. I still got the same error message

Can anyone help?

try to switch off the MercuryX module.
(Mercury/Admin -> Configuration -> Protocol Modules)
It seems that this module blocks Port 25.
