can't access my site from the web

Postby fael097 » 01. March 2010 07:56

hi, i have xampp installed, everything is working fine from my computer, ports are opened, i have dns redirecting the address http://fael097.dontexist.org/ and i can access it from my computer just like via localhost, but other people cant access, connection times out. what should i do? is it a xampp problem?
its weird, because if i can access it via the dns address, that means the redirecting works correctly, it redirects me to my own ip and my ip correclty open the port 80 to me. but not everyone else
thanks in advance

Be careful investigating this one.

McAfee site advisor report on dontexist.org:
"McAfee TrustedSource web reputation analysis found potential security risks with this site. Use with extreme caution."

The user reviews:

According to http://www.hosts-file.net/ if you access this domain you risk to unwillingly download and install malicious software (virus, trojans, spyware, etc) that may damage your computer.

dontexist represents risks to me? jesus... i thought it was only a dynamic dns redirection domain, do you know any good dns redirecting system?

but despite of that, i still need to solve my problem, you can try to access my website directly from my ip http://201.89.151.249 and confirm that the connection times out... weird thing

I only know what others are saying.

I assume the risk has more to do with what's on the subdomains. But if dontexist.org is that lenient about what is on their domain then I would question what else they are too lenient about. I think they would be in a prime position to do a Man-In-The-Middle attack (intentional on their part or not).

hmm, i see.
well, thats probably a risk with all the domains providing dns redirection, since they dont scan what people are hosting on their own computers, thats up to the end user to know what they are accessing, and protect their computers from inside.

as for myself, im just learning php, and trying to access my computer's web folder from others computers. its weird because i used to host a game server some years ago, and the server's emulato had its own web server with a subscription page hosted on port 80, and it used to work fine. but now with xampp this is not working.

I only use XMPP for local development and it works well there. So far the only problem I had seems to be caused by an old application on my computer (I'm doing more testing before I post here). I've been thinking of moving my shared hosting over to a virtual host, but I have no experience on that side of the game so I need to do a little studying. XAMPP may just be the answer.

Of course, there is a risk for everything on the Internet, but with drive-by infections and the like there is no more incidental traffic. Everything is a target and can trash your computer.
