Having trouble accessing web server

Postby jcafaro10 » 04. January 2010 23:50

I have my apache webserver set up on my computer. I can access it fine from the browser my visiting http://localhost:8080 and http://192.168.1.xxx:8080. However I can't access it from http://my.wan.ip.address:8080/ (my ip address as determined by whatismyip.com). I have a router, and I went into the port forwarding settings and I have forwarded port 8080 to 192.168.1.xxx but still can't access it. I have Windows 7. I added an exception for port 8080 to my firewall. Using canyouseeme.org I can see that port 8080 is not able to be connected to. What's going on?

Missing support info - what XAMPP version and which Windows OS?

Did you delete the XAMPP index.php in the htdocs folder and replace it with your own index file or perhaps you deleted the XAMPP index.php in the htdocs folder and placed your own web site files in there?

You can't access XAMPP files and folders on localhost using your WAN IP as defined in the New security concept in the \xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-xampp.conf file - but you should be able to access your own web site files by http://my.wan.ip.address:8080/myown index.php or http://my.wan.ip.address:8080/mywebsite.index.php etc.etc. - but only you alone can test this issue out on your PC.

I could test if people out on the Internet can access your web site if you supply the IP address for testing but I and others on the Internet would not be able to access the XAMPP index.php file in the htdocs folder anyway, so that has to be deleted or renamed - if you feel it a security issues then after I have tested it and posted a reply you can edit your post and delete the WAN IP address if you wish.

I'm using XAMPP 1.7.3 and Windows 7 64-bit.

I did deleted ALL of the contents of the htdocs folder and replaced it when my own index.html file which DOES work but ONLY locally.

http://my.wan.ip.address:8080/ this does NOT work but http://localhost:8080 does work.

When other people try and access http://my.wan.ip.address:8080/ from outside my network, it does not work for them either.

Something else that's weird, in the xampp control panel, with apache not running, if I click port check I can see that under Service, Tomcat(HTTP) is listed with port 8080 and Apache(HTTP) is listed with port 80. Both have status free. If I start apache and run port check again, Tomcat(HTTP) changes its status from free to C:\xampp\apache\bin\httpd.exe as does Apache(HTTPS) with port 443 but Apache(HTTP) 80 stays free.

I changed it from 8080 to 9090 and it worked. I don't know why 8080 won't open...
