How To Get Localhost

Hi

I installed XAMPP For Windows 1.72 on my W drive .

It seems to have installed successfully as I get the XAMPP control panel etc .

I can go to file:///W:/xampp-win32-1.7.2/xampp/htdocs/index.html

and I get this message " IT Works "

My questions are :

1. How can I set up XAMPP so that I can go to http://localhost/name of folder and start up a web session within htdocs

Right now when I type http://localhost/index.html I dont get "IT Works "

2.How do i install the Tomcat extension ? where is the extension addon button ?

You place your files in a folder in the htdocs folder.
http://localhost/name_of_folder/index.php or .html

Right now when I type http://localhost/index.html I dont get "IT Works "

What do you get?

What do you see when you type this in your browser
http://localhost

or this:
http://127.0.0.1

2.How do i install the Tomcat extension ? where is the extension addon button ?

You need to download the Tomcat addon from the same page you downloaded XAMPP from and follow the instructions in the file:
http://www.apachefriends.org/winxampp/r ... tomcat.txt

BTW there are good installation instructions and a link to the FAQ on the same page you downloaded XAMPP from.

Thanks for the reply

When I type http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1/, I get the following

" Firefox cant establish a connection to the server at local host " ( XAMPP is started and Apache and MYSQL is running )

However, when I type file:///W:/xampp-win32-1.7.2/xampp/htdocs/index.html . I get the message

" It works " ( XAMPP is installed on drive W in my PC )

You may have a firewall or Anti-Virus scanner blocking the server.

Temporarily disable the firewall or ZoneAlarm etc. and try again.

If it helps then configure the offender to allow the ports XAMPP uses.

BTW typing file:///W:/xampp-win32-1.7.2/xampp/htdocs/index.html in your browser does not go through the Apache server rather your browser parses the HTML code for viewing.

I removed Skype

I disabled AVAST anti virus .

But still no difference.( I have not disabled the standard Windows XP Firewall )


What else can I do ?

Temporarily disable the Windows firewall or configure it to allow port 80 and 443 through.

Let me know back if that works.

Skype is not an issue if Apache has started and is running.

You can safely enable Avast again as it seems not to be the offender.

We are not finished yet but the firewall has to be removed from the equation or we can be chasing this issue all over the place.

I temporarily disabled Windows Firewall but it still does not work

You can enable the firewall again Maria if you are sure.

Next drag the hosts file into your open text editor - notepad for example.

You can find the hosts file in this folder:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

The first uncommented line should be:
127.0.0.1 localhost

If it is not or it is not present then move it to the top of the list or add it to the top of the list.

Save the file and try again to access the localhost in your browser.

If you are on Vista and having trouble saving the hosts file after editing, let me know and I will explain how to do it.

So I left it as such .

What else can I do o ?

My w drive is on an external disk attached by USB to the PC .Has that got anything to do with it ? ( XAMPP is installed in the w drive )

That all depends on how you installed XAMPP to the USB drive or if the drive is mounted as a fixed partition or as removable media in your system.

If you installed it correctly as a USB removal drive then it should not be an issue.

Did you follow the instruction for installing to a USB and how did you answer the USB question in the Installation script when you installed XAMPP related to removable media on a USB drive?

You may have to uninstall it and try again but first make sure you follow the uninstall instruction methods in the XAMPP for Windows Home Page or in the \xampp\readme-en.txt file.

You may also be able to run the setup_xampp.bat file and switch between absolute (with drive letter) and relative (without drive letter) path names. Without a drive letter is usual for a removable USB installation, with a drive letter is usually for a fixed partition - use selection 2 Relocate XAMPP.

What Windows OS?

Do you have another XAMPP installation anywhere on your PC?
