Unable to access localhost

Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

Unable to access localhost

Postby bob.furber » 09. October 2009 21:29

I removed Xampp 1.6.8 and have just installed Xampp 1.7.2 on Windows Vista PC.

But, when I start Xamp and click the 'start' button for Apache, I get "busy":

XAMPP for Windows Version 1.7.2
Windows 6.0 Build 6002 Platform 2 Service Pack 2
Current Directory: D:\Development\xampp
Status Check OK
Busy...
Apache service started

On attempting to load http://localhost/ in Firefox 3.5.2 I get an error:
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Before you removed 1.6.8 did you make sure all NT services were uninstalled by removing any ticks in the Svc boxes and all XAMPP components stopped using the XAMPP Control Panel (XCP) before deleting the xampp folder?

When you installed 1.7.2 did you use all the default settings when asked the questions in the setup script or did you change any?

Is Apache and MySQL started and showing a green running indication in the XAMPP Control Panel?

Are your firewall settings correct?

Before removing 1.6.8 I did not remove any ticks in the Svc boxes in the Xampp control panel. There were no obvious indications that XAMPP was running when I removed it . I removed 1.6.8 using Control Panel -> Programs and features. I then disabled the UAC to remove the D:\Development\xampp\ directory altogether as some sub-directories were not deleted.

When I ran XAMPP 1.6.8 Control Panel (XCP) I was unable to stop the Apache and MySQL services, My requests were ignored.

When I installed 1.7.2 I used all the default settings, save for the path (D:\Development\) and, when asked the questions in the setup script I asked for the path to be changed?

Apache and MySQL are NOT started nor showing a green running indication in the XAMPP Control Panel. When I click "start" I get:
Busy...
Apache service started.

I do not know enough about Windows Vista to say if firewall settings are correct. V 1.6.8 worked fine a month or less ago. In the meantime, both Vista and FireFox have been updated.

IE8 is not bale to connect to http://localhost/ either: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

Maybe there is some residue left behind from your previous version that is getting in the way of your new version form performing as it should.

Go to your XAMPP Control Panel (XCP) and click on the button Port Check and please let me know back what it tells you.

You may also run the apache_start.bat file and also let me know back what it has to say why Apache can't start.

Port-check returns all ports as free. The screenshot: http://sbctools.com/hmi/PortCheck.png.

D:\Development\xampp>apache_start.bat
Now we start Apache
Starting "apache"...
"apache" is started.
Press any key to continue . . .

D:\Development\xampp>

Interestingly, http://localhost/ is now accessible.

I then ran apache_stop.bat and http://localhost/ was no longer accessible.

Then I opened the XCPA and tried to start apache, and got a "busy...". Screenshot: http://sbctools.com/hmi/XCPA.png.
However, http://localhost/ is now accessible.

I ran apache_stop.bat again and http://localhost/ was no longer accessible.

Tried starting from XCPA. Got "busy" again and was UNABLE to access http://localhost/

It seems as if my problem is with the XCPA.

I see the Svc boxes are ticked in your XCP, which means that both Apache and MySQL are installed as an NT Service and will be started automagically when you boot your PC.

To check this click on the SCM button in the XCP and look for the Apache and MySQL entries and you can the see what state they are in ie. stopped or started.

If you remove the ticks in the Svc boxes and then try and manually start Apache and MySQL you may find that it will work as you intended.

What seems to be happening and is the result of ticks in the Svc boxes, is you are trying to start the Apache server again when it is already started and this will give "busy... Apache service started" message.

Un-checking the Svc boxes fixed everything. The local host server works great. The XCPA appears to be working as it should.

Thank you very much for all your help.

Hmmmmmm... re-enabling User Access Control (UAC) on Vista causes Xampp to stop working: Localhost becomes inaccessible and the XCPA becomes unresponsive (clicking Apache start button: Busy..).

Is there a way for Xampp and UAC to coexist?

Thanks,

Aaaaaargh!!!!

I rebooted my PC and now Xampp works fine with UAC.

Again, sorry for the false alarm.

Consider enabling the Vista Secret Super Administrator Account and say goodbye to UAC hassle prompts.
