Port 80 or 443 (SSL) already in use!

I installed XAMPP 1.7.2 successfully on by Vista Laptop, but unfortunately Joomla is not compatible with PHP5.3, so I uninstalled XAMPP and tried to install XAMPP 1.7.1 as that uses PHP5.2.

However during the reinstall it said that 'Port80 or 443(SSL) already in use! Installing Apache2.2 service failed'. The XAMPP control panel then had Mysql running but not Apache and the SVC box was not ticked. I ticked the SVC box to install Apache, then clicked START and it said started successfully, but when I click on the admin button I get 'Internet Explorer cannot display webpage'.

With apache uninstalled again, I entered netstat -an in the command prompt but cannot see anything with 80 or 443 in the IP addresses, so there doesn't appear to be anything using it. (I don't have Skype installed either).

I have also tried to change the port XAMPP is using by changing C://XAMPP/apache/conf/httpd file to have 'Listen 8080' and 'ServerName localhost:8080'. I unticked the SVC box to uninstall apache, then ticked it again to reinstall and clicked START. I got the message saying running, but again no webpage was shown in either http://localhost/ or http://localhost:8080/. However I did notice that port 8080 is now there in netstat -an.

I'm pretty new to this and I've spent a couple of days looking through other forum entries with this problem and still not managed to solve it.

Has anyone got any suggestions as I'm out of ideas?

Cheers
Dan

Make sure your firewall etc. is not interfering by temporarily disabling, then try again.

Make sure that you have disabled IIS as it uses 80/443 combo.

Thanks Izzy, but I'm still having the same problem.

I disabled the firewall and pressed the start button clicked admin but still got the error message Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

I went into Control Panel > Administative Tools > Services and then scrolled through to see if I can find anything that looked like it related to IIS but there was nothing there so I don't believe it is running for me to disable. I also had a look in Control Panel > Programs and Features to see if IIS is there, but its not.

When I uninstalled it first time round it must have left something behind that messed up the re install.... Can't remember whether I uninstalled it while it was still running or not. Some forums indicate that this can cause problems. Does anyone know whether there is a way to check this and what I should do to fix it ?

Hi,

I am a Windows XP user and I believe this post relates some how to the same problem that I have...

I have installed Xampp successfully and it works fine, however, when I try to install Joomla or Drupal I receive the following the following error message:

Apache/2.2.11 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8i PHP/5.2.9 Server at localhost Port 80

I have looked on my pc and I dont have IIS installed and Xampp version that i use is 1.7.1

Any suggestions or ideas on how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

any idea how can install joomla or drupal ?

Sorry, I know nothing about these programs.

(I guess a support forum for Joomla or Drupal is a better place for questions about installing these programs.)

Hi, I've still not managed to sort my problem with the port 80 being used. I think I'm going to have to resort to reformatting my laptop and starting again!

Before I do this has no one got any last minute suggestions of how I can resolve this?

Just thought I would let you know that I reformatted my laptop back to factory settings, reinstalled XAMPP (along with everything else!) and XAMPP now works a treat. Took chuffin ages though!
