XAMPP in LAN, chmod in XP not possible.

Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

XAMPP in LAN, chmod in XP not possible.

Postby dirkovision » 11. August 2009 19:28

As chmod in Window$ environment is not valid, we have problems in 777 the files as well as uploading modules and plugins, and editing css etc. to the test environment.

The error rcvd from the box in the LAN is: SITE CHMOD 777 index.html (or any other file)
(000023) 11-8-2009 17:16:28 - admin (192.168.1.26)> 504 Command not implemented for that parameter

and the files remain uneditable.
in outlook we try to change the read only tag, but does not solve this problem.

The box from wich we try to chmod and edit / upload files uses filezilla and connects, showing all files trees.
ip 192.168.1.26 The box where xampp is installed and running is 192.168.1.14

Filezilla as server is operational. Both boxes run filzilla clients ok.

d..??

There is no chmod on Windows, so you can't have a problem in "777 the file". (or: you can't 777 a file because there is no chmod, because ... and so on ...)

as well as uploading modules and plugins, and editing css etc. to the test environment.

So you are talking about a specific web application?
Or how are you "uploading modules and plugins, and editing css etc"?

yes, we are trying to setup an edit and test environment fr joomla thema's / sites.
sofar we use http://cms6.net4all.hu en http://flexedit.nl etc, but need to test and edit locally..

we have on oth boxes in the LAN filezilla as client, and on the xampp also filzilla server.
from one box to the other we can see the tree, but cannot down/upload or change rights (as chmod is for *nix environmnet.)

what would be a good sulution to get it working, instead of only on local workstation.. ?

thanks

but cannot down/upload

Why not?

How are you logged in at the FTP server?

we can see the tree,

You can see "C:\xampp\htdocs" or is this another directory?

as admin, and granted rights in the server setup.

So you have created your own user in FileFilla?

maybe this helps:

box 1: Ip 192.168.1.14 filezilla client. set to host 192.168.1.26 port 21 user admin, password. remote dir set as /xampp/J15/\ (where J15 is subdir of /xampp/htdocs/J15)
box 2: IP 192.168.1.26 filezilla client set to host 192.168.1.14 etc.

server set to admin rights granted on all files on c:\\

maybe it has something to do with the slash or backslash. / or \ in the path. we are not familiair wit Wndow$$.. :-(

joomla backmin gives FTP error when trying to install any module or plugin.
Therefor we try to change rights with chmod, but as chmod is for *nix only, we are stuck... :-(

Sorry. Don't really understand what this means.

Maybe you can just answer my last question?

BTW:
joomla backmin gives FTP error when trying to install any module or plugin.

Why is your joomla using FTP, instead of just storing the files to the local filesystem.

filezilla server or client?
as in both clients we point to the host, the server 192.168.1.14
the dir where the joomla files are stored.

and a ftp layer is needed in order to install plugins and mod's in j!..
thats' why, but if you know a better way..??

filezilla server

Server. Because there is no user "admin" in the XAMPP default installation.

and a ftp layer is needed in order to install plugins and mod's in j!..

Just no. You don't need a ftp layer.

sorry to say so, but if you want to edit and modify joomla! in a LAN on a local server in this LAN dev. environment, you will need the FTP layer in order to upload extensions and plugins through your backend interface of Joomla, whereas the zipped files reside on a local box in the LAN.
Have a try, and let us please know how you solved it ?. Would be of very high interest to the community...
As most of the downloaded plugins in gzip or .rar extension reside local, you need def. ftp layer.

If you think not could you please inform us the way you would solve this, and make us part of it, instead of just saying no, you do not need it..??

Your reply, suggestions and solutions are very much appreciated..!!

If you install/upload extensions and plugins with the Joomla Webbackend, Joomla don't need FTP. It only uses FTP, if you configure it to use it.
(the FTP layer is only necessary, if you have PHP safe_mode problems, or problems with user permissions on some *nix hosts)

if you think not could you please inform us the way you would solve this, and make us part of it, instead of just saying no, you do not need it..??

A Joomla support/user forum is a better place to ask questions about Joomla.

But back to your FTP server problem and uploading files with FileZilla FTP Client to your FileZilla FTP Server from XAMPP.

I don't quite follow what is going on here... Nor does anyone else. :|

If you have physical access to this machine, why don't you just put the files where they need to go without using FTP? It would be so much easier. Plus, make sure that the folder Joomla! is contained within isn't marked as read-only as that can cause issues as well.
