Top Level Directory question and Directory mismatch error

Postby bdawg923 » 26. May 2009 04:53

I'm following a tutorial (to learn AJAX) and I needed to set up a webserver for this on my machine. I have the files needed to test the example, but I don't know where to put them. In the tutorial, it says this:

If you already have a webserver running on your machine, it has PHP installed, and you know where the webserver’s top-level document directory is, you can try running the script in Figure 14-6. To do so, put the files longWait.php, shortWait.php, and Fig14-06.html in a directory named boj, and put that directory in the top-level directory of your webserver. Then browse to http://localhost/boj/Fig14-06.html. If that doesn’t work, try http://127.0.0.1/boj/Fig14-06.html.

I unzipped xampp-win32-1.7.1 to C:\xampp (without install). Where could I put the boj folder with the files? Which is the top level directory? I tried putting it in C:\xampp\boj but I just get a Object not found! error in my web browser. This is probably a very obvious answer but I'm new to this stuff so I would appreciate any help.

I have a second question too. When I start XAMPP Control Panel it says "Install Directory: ***WARNING: Directory mismatch.***" but if I type in http://localhost/ in my browser everything works fine. Is this normal? Why do I get this error and how do I fix it? Thanks.

C:\xampp\htdocs known as the DocumentRoot in Apache terms and if you put your boj folder in there then http://localhost/boj/ will give you a file listing or the index page you require - C:\xampp\htdocs\ = http://localhost/

The XAMPP for Windows Home Page and the FAQ may be a good starting point for more info.

This is quite normal and is a hard coded feature of the XCP which, as you now know, can be ignored as it does not effect anything to do with the smooth running of your XAMPP installation.

However, if you wish to remove that message then a forum search in the XAMPP for Windows forum for the above message will find a link to the registry hack method used.
